I am looking for a Bridge camera, mainly for bird photography. I've narrowed down the short list to the Fujifilm HS50 EXR, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 and the Canon SX 500. I'll be grateful for any advice on this planned purchase. Maybe there are other options? Many thanks!

Chris,

The Canon SX50 is (in my opinion) the longest zoom lens bridge camera available today (50x optical). My mom owns it and I own the Canon SX40 (35x optical). And with the Digic 5 processor it can really capture true colors (better than some DSLRs).

But these are the only bridge cameras that I have personal experience with. Go to your local camera store and test out the cameras you like and pick the one that really appeals to you most.

Hope this helps. Good Luck! 8-)

Forget the SX500. It has no viewfinder. IMHO, using such a camera at full zoom while looking at an LCD screen held at close to arm's length is like sniper shooting at a target 1 mile away without a telescopic sight and while standing up

I'm biased towards the Fuji HS50EXR. It's my third iteration of the series and the best model yet. See A Grand Display posting in the Photo Gallery for some recent shots with this camera. Easy to operate, no shake with handheld, and good long lens coverage. I've not used the digital zoom because the optical is more than satisfactory.

There are as many opinions as there are cameras. I love the SX 50, and many on this site use one. It works for me. There are many on line sites that compare the latest bridge cameras, and you can see which features are important to you.

You have a good point there. I have a HS20EXR and a newer Canon SX50. I took shots of a mushroom with both, same settings, and the Fuji had the truest color.

But here, again, no viewfinder. Good luck holding that puppy steady at full zoom w/o a tripod

OP said SX500, others have chimed in regarding the SX50.

SX500 has no viewfinder, drop that from your short list and add SX50!

Hi Chris............I have the Canon SX40, it takes great pics., the SX50 is their impoved model with more zoom and possibly raw images too.

SX50 (not SX500) is a great option. It is a great long range birder & hand holding at full zoom is not a myth--many of us do it regularly. Go into 'Search' & type in 'SX50'. You will see a myriad of bird shots, some at extreme ranges. :D

And you don't have to go to extreme ranges to enjoy the SX50. Take a look at this flower picture. Pretty narrow depth of field and nice bokeh; the kind of things that DSLR users talk about
