I have been using raw images with Canon editing software. I just bought LR5. My picture folders contain 5,000+ images, most in RAW format with some processing already completed. My question: How do I open these folders in LR5 without losing the processing that's already been done to them. Must I convert the files from RAW to retain the changes I've already made to the images? If so, which format will give me the most image info to use in LR5? Thanks......

If you edited RAW images, you have nothing to fear. Raw images, by their very nature, are un-editable. You can change the file, but saving it will cause it to revert to the original. If you have made changes, surely you have saved those edited images as another type of file, perhaps TIFF or, most likely, JPEG.

Any changes you made to your raw files in Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) will not be available when you open those same raw files in Lightroom 5. If you want to see those changes in Lightroom 5 you will have to export your files in DPP using the Convert and Save or Batch process features to create jpeg or tiff files. I believe using the last conversion option in DPP - TIFF 16bit and Exif - would be the best option for further editing, but you should experiment.

You wont loose the editing either. When you upgrade LR it uses uses the settings from your old LR on the images. If you had your old LR setup to create sidecars with the editing info, that will not change. If you set the old LR up to save all the settings in the catalog, then you'll still keep all the old image editing info. So don't worry. I don't believe that much changed from LR4 to LR5 anyway so the process versions are just about the same.

OP said "Canon editing software"
No earlier version of LR to import from.

Just another one of my pet peeves.

He wasn't upgrading from Lightroom, he was upgrading from a Canon product. I assume it was DPP. If so, the edits will be unavailable unless the OP first creates jpegs or tiffs with the raw updates.
