I have been to the Lake Superior area four times this summer, with the intention of getting this photograph. Because of the Worldwide Photo Walk, I was able to talk to photographers who live in that area and asked them if they knew of a place like this. If I remember right, the shoreline in Duluth used to have some old docks and the remains of them like this, but there are none there now. Everything is new and plastic.
There was a professional photographer that knew of this place and he described to me how to get there. So I got up at 3:30 am, since I couldn't sleep through the loud noise of the pouring rain on my tent. I headed up the coast, hoping that the weather would be dry enough to get the shot when I got there. It was, and after a few little revelations about the challenges of shooting in bulb on a beach where big waves are coming in and moving the sand under your tripod around, I made some adjustments, and got the shot.

What a shot!!
Looks great!

I remember you saying you liked shots that tell a story. Well, this one speaks of structures long gone, and all we have now is this lonely beach. Very evocative.

Please tell us you have a color version of this great shot. You spent your early morning hours wisely as it is outstanding. All the different athmospheres and textures are begging for color.
Just a super shot!! I also wonder what it looks like in color.....:)
Beautiful shot, Nightski!

Yes, I took it in color. Thank you UP-2-it :-D
Excellent shot--apparently worth the effort of finding the site and getting up early. Nice work!
