I don't think these quite qualify as macros, just close-ups. There's a shadow in the first one and even if you cropped it out, sorry, but it's just not a very interesting subject. The second and third ones are not focused properly. The third one looks like it could be interesting if there was a bit more light and a bit more macro, and the last one falls into that uninteresting category again. Macro shots of ice are really hard to get right, I've tried a few of those myself. Try again, get in really close to the ice with the shot so that we can see the individual crystals and snowflakes that make it soooo coooold!! And pay a little more attention to the focus. I would suggest to that you don't use flash, it might reflect too much. Try to get some natural sunshine going on and you might even see some different colors when the ice refracts the light. Good luck!

thank you very much for the input. I have just crossed over from point and shoot and have lots to learn about my camera and photography in general so all advice/critique is greatly appreciated.

These may not be the most interesting things you shoot, but they serve an important purpose - that are part of the learning process. It's also good to look at things differently and try to present them in a new way.

I did a photo challenge where you shoot ten things in one room. You can only use available light (windows, room lamps) and no post processing other than cropping and leveling - no adjustments to exposure, white balance, or color. It was a challenge, both technically as well as creatively.

I highly recommend it. My results are here: http://www.morguefile.com/portfolio/browse/#/?display=756700

I also like scavenger hunts. It's like you used to do at camp as a kid . . . make a list of things to photograph. They can be items, colors, concepts, or even emotions.
1. circle
2. triangle
3. a sign
4. a reflection
5. a door
6. top-left to bottom-right diagonal
7-12. The letters A through F
13. happy
14. confused
etc.
