Commercials and network news

Can anyone explain why all three networks give their listeners 20 minutes of network news in a 30 minute segment? And most of the commercials are subjects that deal with name brand prescriptions, "ask your doctor". I love "when we return" or "on the other side" or "stay with us". And then, "finally tonight" which of course signals that it's almost over. We use Dish Network which means we pay almost $100 a month for this service YET we continue to be subjected to commercials. Isn't this reason enough for us viewers not to be subjected?? I mean, it should be if one pays for that signal, like Dish or Direct TV or Comcast or time Warner, as opposed to using an antenna, then viewing should be commercial free. Makes sense, right?? CBS, by the way, is the worse culprit....like they don't make enough money as it is. Hey...thanks for HDDVR.

I use Dish too. What we are paying for is the reception service delivered via satellite. What the commercials are paying for is the programming, without which there would be no need for a reception service. The alternative is something like, what I understand, England has where there is a fee for the right to have a operating TV. One way or the other, the programming costs have to be paid for.

So, I guess we just have to grin and bear it...
Cheers, Neil

I like commercials (said with tongue in cheek). They show more imagination than most of the programming.

I agree completely. Many of the commercials are a lot funnier than the comedy shows. They manage to be funny without using profanity.

Whether it's news, sports or other entertainment TV, the reason that the networks average 1/3 commercials and 2/3 content is that the viewers will tolerate it.

That's a big pet peeve of mine. We pay for the service and like shmucks we sit through those stupid ads that are 50 decibels over the legal limit geared for the K crowd that insult our intelligence. They would put 25 minutes in a 30 minute show if they could get away with it. That's why I tape everything on the DVR and fast forward through. Here in Florida most are drug, hover-rounds, cancer treatment centers, etc. spots. Very depressing. I refuse to spend the little time I have left watching that capitalistic brain mush and spend most of my TV time on Netflix. Telemarketers are another similar matter. They defy the law because our wonderful government doesn't enforce. When they call me they get a long wait because there is always someone at the door and I'll be right back. Hold on please.

Once again...we are paying for the delivery service. The product (programming) is paid for by the commercials. Just as ordering from Amazon - pay for the delivery, and pay for the product. Two separate fees.
