So I've owned the Canon S95, and I've just been forced to "Donate" me Olympus XZ-1 to my wife who I obviously can not say no to in the slightest bit.
That being said, I am now free to go out into the world and replace it! I do a lot of cold weather urban night time shooting with it. What Im lookin for is a point and shoot with extreme open aperture, manual mode (must), and cold weather ready. And small size is a HUGE plus. Some bridge cameras are almost T3i size. Also, ability to shoot RAW if needed would be awesome.
Do I get another Olympus, or do y'all have luck with something better? My budget is under $800 for this. And I would rather not have interchangeable lenses. What do you guys use, or dream to have?

I shoot with a Panasonic LX5 as my "P&S". All metal, full controls, IMO good color and IQ, and a number of worthwhile accessories to maximize it's photographic potential.

Went to a local auto museum yesterday and found I liked it's IQ overall as compared to my Nikon D40 with the nifty-fifty f/1.8 attached.

They are under $400 now at most online dealers.

If not familiar with it, the Lieca-branded zoom lens is the 35mm equal to 24-90mm with f/2.0-3.6 max aperature.

Cannon S100 has the top reviews. However panasonic lx5 is close in rankings and you can purchase a veiwfinder that slides into the hot shoe.

Canon G12. Gives you lots of control. Good range of ISO. Has viewfinder. Is rugged. Menu/functions are easy to learn and use. Has built in ND filters, shoots raw, have used it in Birdland w/o flash and got some great pics of musicians. Used it on the street as a street camera not intrusive. Have set one of the programs to B/W so can instantly switch between color and B/W. In short, really like the camera and its capabilities. was a Leica user and find this is the next best thing in digital.

The g12 is pocket size. i carry it in my jacket pocket. if you just want a p/s get the cheapest thing around and hold it up arms length away to take a pic. or better still buy a cell phone

I have heard a lot about the Panasonic LX5. And I've also tried to
Find the new Canon 100. I would be interested in taking a look at the Pentax. With the G12, you have one awesome camera with enough bells and whistles to rival the big guns. But size is an issue, and that it on the large side of what I'm looking for, but not ruled out.

How do these cameras handle with no tripod in low/no light. How crazy does the noise get?

Thank you for your responses! This community is as usual spot in with selections.

Tripsy76 Check out the reviews on the new Sony HX9V.
16 megapixel and full HD movies.
I just bought one myself for a 'walkaround' pocket camera to catch the shots I see but never have my DSLR with me.
It does NOT shoot raw unfortunately but otherwise is great.
Checkout flickr.com and type HX9V in the search box. A ton of great photos taken with the camera. Good hunting.

John.

the problem I find with the point and shoots except for the G12 and the Nikon competitor is that they have no view finder. I just cannot get a good shot holding the camera half an arms length away. I find this especially so in bright sun or dim light.

In short, I find an integrated viewfinder most important. It maybe because that is the way I learned to shoot. For me that is the first thing I look for in a p/s camera - an integrated view finder.

Others may find my need for such and item wrong but this is one man's opinion.
