I take night pictures wherever I go and can never determine which is the more acceptable of the exposures. If I was to ever enter in contest, is there one that generally scores higher?

I much prefer the lighter image since it shows more foreground detail. I think I would eliminate the moon and star though as they are not in focus and take the eye away from the skyline. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and both shots are very good.

Personally I would prefer the 2nd image, to me the lighting on the foreground brush distracts from the beauty of city lights and reflections on the water.

I agree. I like the second one better as well and I do also agree the moon and star drags the eye away from the skyline. Maybe if they were in closer proximity to the tallest well-lit building so that they weren't such a distracting focal point...if you just really want to keep them in the photo.

I hate to take the easy way out but I think some where in the middle keeping the city lights and a lighter water reflection but reducing the 'sky halo' over the city that looks artificial.

I would vote for #2 as is. First has more distractions for me. Either way...beautiful images. ;-)

Thank you for the comments. What I posted was unedited out of my iPad. When I downloaded from my camera to my computer, I cropped the wall out of the foreground and really liked that image. I did keep the moon and Venus in the picture as we just don't get that many clear sky's here! Earlier, I tried focusing on them and that didn't work at all. I was tempted to bring a tripod, but was just too tired for that!

Thank you fawlty and singing. Each of these pictures offer so many cropping opportunities which will address most of the comments made here.

I notice the first because it is brighter and therefore shows more detail, but the more I look at the second I notice detail not shown in the first.
I would composite the two.

I like the second one, less distractions but they both look good.

I guess I'd have to be a Mugwump on this, too.
