NEW YORK (AP) — A Fox News Channel anchor apologized for falsely saying that President Barack Obama had offered to pay for the operation of a museum of Muslim culture "out of his own pocket" during the government shutdown.

Anchor Anna Kooiman made the remark Saturday on "Fox & Friends" during a discussion about closed facilities. She didn't cite a source, but a satirical news site called "National Report" had posted a story headlined: "Obama Uses Own Money to Open Muslim Museum Amid Government Shutdown."

The fake story said that Obama had "held a press conference" to announce he would use his own money to reopen the International Museum of Muslim Cultures in Jackson, Miss.

Kooiman said Saturday she didn't think it was fair that World War II veterans faced a closed Washington monument honoring people killed during that conflict.

"We're going to talk a little bit later in the show, too, about some things that are continuing to be funded," she said. "And President Obama has offered to pay out of his own pocket for the Museum of Muslim Culture."

It was her last mention of the museum. On Sunday, she said on Twitter that she had made a mistake after receiving flawed research. "My apologies," she tweeted. "Won't happen again."

Fox will correct the mistake on the air this Saturday, a spokeswoman said. Fox's policy is to correct mistakes on the same show where they are made.

It's not clear how the mistake was made. The National Report doesn't clearly label the story a joke. One story on the site Monday was headlined "Jesus Christ Boycotts Hobby Lobby," a reference to the craft store. Polls show a consistent minority of Americans believe Obama is a Muslim, even though he is Christian.

At least one thing is accurate in the story. There actually is an International Museum of Muslim Cultures in Jackson, Miss., and it has been open since 2001. The museum does not take federal operating funds and is not affected by the shutdown, said Okolo Rashid, its co-founder, on Monday.

She said she was bewildered to get dozens of calls regarding Obama — some of them disturbing — in the past few days until one of her co-workers pointed out the spoof story.

"Of course, they're supposed to check their facts," she said. "But often, they don't."
---------------------

As so many UHH nutniks of all political stripes jump on a blogger's opinion piece (or in this case, a satirical spoof) and post it here as if it were established fact, Fox's Anna Kooiman jumped on this and treated it like a factual item on a supposedly "news" show on Fox without checking sources for verification.

In typical Fox fashion, they admit the mistake, but their "policy" is to wait and make the correction on the same show that aired the mistake. Nothing like letting a phony story fester for a week, before being corrected on air. How many devoted Fox yahoos will run their indignation over this non-story in the coming week? As I've said here before, Fox's slogan, "We report, you decide" might be more truthful if it were amended to "We frequently stretch the truth, and you buy it without question".

I never watch fOX news. Its ABC for me because we get more local news. But having said that I give FOX a lot of creadit when they admit when they make a bo bo. Because ABC CBS OR NBC never dose. We have to find out weeks later when the truth comes out. And the damage is done.

Sorry to disagree with you, but as a reader of 4 different newspapers everyday, and a viewer of all the major networks' news programs either live or DVRed, I can tell you that most acknowledge mistakes overnight, or I've witnessed them do it even the same day.

As a retired instructor in journalism and writing, I do take an inordinate interest in what is reported and how it is reported.

Then you must have a field day with CNN. If a mistake was made on "Fox & Friends" in the morning then that is the show that should report the mistake and make the apology, not to run it all day as if it made national news. Have you ever heard of an AR-15 Shotgun? That was CNN.

I do Not dispute what Beowulf said above.... but I too watch all of the "major" tv news sites and have seen them make many mistakes that were not corrected for quite a while... even at least one, that they refused to change when given information that they were wrong....

One can get a whole different take on the news by watching all the various outlets... THE nice thing is that you can watch Fox for an hour in the morning, then MSNBC for an hour, then ABC for an hour, then CBS for an hour and then..... ad nauseum (sp) And you will be able to compare how each covered the same story...... YOU MAY or MAY NOT be surprised at the differences......

You mean like NBC not doctoring 911 tapes?

Not true at all. I have seen Brian Williams acknowledge errors and omissions.

So a human made a mistake...and when that human found out that they made a mistake, they admitted it an apologized and then will issue a formal retraction in the same venue that it was made in...

And how is this not the right thing to do exactly?

If you hate Fox news just say it and save me all that reading.

They (the Liberals) call call it "Faux News" because it leans right and not left like the other networks. However, with Fox, you hear from both sides not just one sided like the others. Thank God we have other views and not just the liberal view.

Why can't these people do the research and get it right in the first place? It is easier to shoot from the lip and get the ratings then to do their jobs from the start.

Well Beou, I'm glad that you just watch Fox and don't see the outright lies that ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, spout on a regular basis, especially if it is on the oposition. How good of a job did the mainstream media do on vetting the big "O"?? Not much. They are up his backside so far that they all have a shitty outlook and their reporting of inventing of news shows it. What a bunch of loosers.
