It seemed like a calm day so I thought I would give jrb1213's tip on droplet refraction a try...but it was breezier (a real word?) than I thought so the droplets were blown away repeatedly. However the sugar water attracted some black and yellow striped creatures who were willing to pose a bit. C&C welcome and appreciated.

Aaah Sugar!
Aaah Sugar!...

Thanks So Much

You did the opposite of me. I was attracting bees with sugar water and saw the refraction in the drops. Also got plenty of bees
Hover flies, great subjects, most of us here photograph them, and my first really good shot was of one.

This was taken late morning with bright sunlight, surrounded by light colored things and I still used a diffused flash at 1/4 power.

Lighting is still an issue. The second one the focus is just behind the eye. This addiction takes a lot of practice. Keep it up.
If you had better lighting on the last photo it may have been a keeper. The whole hover fly was in focus

Thanks so much for the critique. Now that you point out the flaws, I can see them...guess that eye exam IS overdue. The shots were taken with just the built-in flash so I should have run for the ttl and diffuser...all part of the learning process. Thanks for your patience. Carter

Is your diopter adjusted to your vision?

I think so. I do check it once a month or so...a little back and forth...out of focus to back in focus. In truth, I think the glasses just aren't cutting it just right...an eye exam is pending later this month! Thanks for the thought though...appreciated! Carter
