UK gun control working well.
This is only for UK members really but I just wanted to say how pleased I am that we have effective gun control in this country. Last week a young man was arrested and charged with planning a " Columbine-style massacre" at his former school. When arrested and his room search police found an arsenal of deadly weapons including pipe-bombs and knives but importantly when it came to guns they only found air pistols, air rifles and BB guns.
Thank goodness he had no access to powerful weapons and little chance of acquiring them in other ways.
You are fortunate to live in a country where common sense has determined the gun laws instead of a country where the NRA and gun manufacturers rule!
I absolutely agree ! It's so much more civilized to get killed with a pipe bomb or a meat cleaver ! 8-)

Well Gorgehike, obviously I can't comment on the gun control laws in your country and neither would be right for me to do so, that's for you and your fellow citizens to sort out. But over the last 100 years or so we've managed to achieve a sensible gun owning culture with those that need them or want them being able to acquire them
if they are deemed worthy.
There's always the odd nutter who's managed to get a gun permit then goes bananas but generally, it works.

There is no nice way to die a violent death. But that doesn't mean we just let anybody have whatever means they need to create mayhem. If thousands of people were being hacked to death with cleavers wouldn't you want them outlawed?

We haven't outlawed automobiles yet.....should we?
Maybe we should put all the crazies back in the mad house....is that a good idea?
....then again, that would be so inhumane wouldn't it ! 8-)
Seem to remember not to long ago a member of a gun club in England went on a rampage in a school and slaughtered a bunch of school kids

Yes, that was the terrible Dunblane massacre in 1996. It led to the banning of private ownership of hand-guns and an investigation of why this monster had firearms of any sort since he'd had many issues with local people and was totally unsuitable.

Farmer Jim, and the investigation revealed what?
yes....U.K. gun control is working well....for criminals. The actual figures prove this....
According to the FBI, there were 1.2 million violent crimes committed in the US during 2011. FBI uniform crime reports
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/violent-crime/violent-crimeAccording to the UK government, there were 1.94 million violent crimes in the UK during 2011.
http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/dcp171778_296191.pdfThere are almost exactly five times as many people in the US as in the UK 314 million vs. 63 million. The violent crime rate in the UK is 3,100 per 100,000, and in the US it is 380 per 100,000 population.
Brits are eight times more likely to be victims of violent crime than Americans. For some reason, Piers Morgan doesnt talk about this.

The Cullen inquiry recommended that the government should bring in tighter controls on handgun ownership and also that school security should be improved. Further information on the inquiry is limited because the results are sealed for 100 years but it's believed the police may have had some criticism since they'd had dealings with Hamilton. Statistics can be misleading Bunjax, The FBI defines a violent crime as one of four specific offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. By contrast, the UK definition includes
all crimes against the person, including simple assaults, all robberies, and all sexual offenses, as opposed to the FBI, which only counts aggravated assaults and forcible rapes. So it's almost impossible to compare countries.
I don't want to get into discussion about this, like I said in the OP, it's really for the UK members to comment.
