I was just holding down the shutter button on my 3Ti when a loud pop came from the camera. Has anyone ever experienced this?

That's scary! I have same camera, nothing like that so far. Are you able to take photos now?

HFT, only once. I was using my camera to make pop corn, but I guess that was to be expected !!
Hey, just kidding.
I would be a little concerned. I would call Canon and have a chat with them. Is it still under warranty? As Linda asked, I assume it still shots, since you didn't say otherwise.
HFT, welcome to the Hog, and good luck with that.

PS, usually it's only Nikons that blow up in ones hands, hmmmm !!

Thanks for the warm welcome to the site.
The camera does still take pictures..
I am thinking it could be the strobe even though it still functions.
I will take your advice and call Canon.

Sounds like a flash malfunction. It's the only circuit with enough voltage to cause a "pop" (about 300v). This'll scramble your camera too if you're not careful. If it's under warranty, great, if not this might cost you a dollar or two. Best to have it checked out though.

Canon cameras have three rubber bands which run the whole gizmo. The rubber bands are wound up by a little electric motor thingy powered by a battery. The system was dreamed up by famed nutcase inventor Heath Robinson and is a slight refinement on his water wheel powered camera which proved to be somewhat ungainly. Unfortunately the winding device was not fitted with a limit switch and it sounds that you have overcharged your battery which caused this catastrophic failure. Fortunately Canon has incorporated a dual fail-safe backup device in the form of the two extra mechanical energy storage devices to carry the whole kit and kaboodle through to just past the warranty period. As the OEM part is cut from old bicycle inner tubes anyway a DIY replacement should not be a problem. Just tell little Molly to walk to school.

I am assuming that the flash unit is powered by storing the energy in an electrolytic capacitor. Sometimes there is a weakness in the capacitor and it shorts out internally causing a pop. Sometimes they will seal themselves up and still work but it would be best to have it repaired
