From ebay --

As a result of new regulations, all products being sent from Hong Kong by air must be x-rayed. This could result in significant delays, so allow a week more than the seller's stated delivery time. Also, items containing lithium batteries are being returned to the sellers, rather than being shipped.

Not a big deal really right now, since all customs agents are furloughed and no incoming freight is getting screened anyway, they are just stockpiling it for now.

I had the impression the x-ray was being done in H. K.

You can't scare them off. They're like ants to honey. Just throw a few nickels on the floor and they'll slither in. You'll know when they're all there by counting the slime trails.

Lithium batteries are known for the possibility of self destruction, they can generate heat to the point of causing fires. They are not suppose to be on commercial flights (allowed in personal use items, not shipped in bulk), and are seriously regulated on cargo flights.

I would have thought there would not be a problem if packaged properly to prevent a short. If I understood you they are allowed on commercial flights if they in cameras, phones, etc. Any type battery will get extremely hot if a short occurs.

That's not it Doc ..... Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries become unstable and are prone to explode if they run down too low .....

..... this is why Lithium Ion batteries contain circuitry built in that shuts them down if the charge gets too low .....

..... it's like a internal fuse that blows and the battery will never again take a charge .....

..... this is why they should be charged when the camera shuts off from a low battery ..... never turn your camera back on 15 minutes later for another minute or two of usage .....

Lithium batteries can cause their own problems from an internal problem. Never heard of a shut down circuit being built into them. But I do recall of having one in my hand that was going bad and as the following story goes I did the same thing.

There was this cowboy that came off the range into town and had no money, so he was trying to amuse himself the best he could. He went to the Gen Store, then saloon to see who was there, and eventually he walked into the livery stable. Looking around he didn't see the blacksmith, but still trying to amuse himself he saw a horseshoe on the anvil and picked it up. Quick as a snake he flung the shoe from his hand.

Out of somewhere a voice said - hot wasn't it, I am not quite done with that one. The cowboy trying to recover quickly said naw! I've seen many horseshoes before and didn't need to look at it too long.

That battery I had was extremely hot, and I didn't need to look at it too long since I've seen batteries before too!

If you look into the matter you will find that FAA has declared that these batteries have caused a fire aboard planes before. They have special rules for lithium batters when shipped bulk.
