Be careful; Canon is programming their cameras, so they do not work too well with after-market speedlights. My G12 will only work properly, with a Canon brand speedlight. Prior to the G12 the older G's, would work with other than Canon units.

Make sure whatever someone recommends to you, they have used it, and can verify that it works.

Took two seconds to google this.

It is not very versatile or powerful, but probably a tad better than the pop-up on the camera.

The 270ex, is what I use with my G12. It has quite a bit of whack, if you use it in manual, and crank up the power.

Even in auto TTL operation, it will beat your pop-up.

If you are doing off-camera flash you can use a cheap YongNuo YN-560 as a slave to your pop-up and get some really great results.
It is powerful, fast and did I mention cheap...

If you need/want TTL, stick with the Canon line, the 430ex gets great reviews, but is a bit out of your price range.

You might want to check the buy/sell forum. There are always folks who are trying to move up into the higher end models and looking to sell what they have to help defray some of their costs. Just a thought.

Indeed jdtx and others ... as jdtx said "can be triggered by other flashes"!! Yes, indeed and that can be a problem. My Sony looks like a lightening storm of pre-flashes before it really shoots. I am not sure how many pre-flashes. The typical slave wakes up with the first flash. I have a Zeikos which delays up to 4, but have not tried it yet on my Sony DSLR. I assume Canon/Nikon etc have the same problem with multi-preflashes?

Educate and share please. What is your experience? Budget is a problem. I can not afford to pay $400 for camera and then $500 for flash "company"!!! (exaggeration)

You really need to get the book "Speedliter's Handbook" by Syl Arena.

This book will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about your Canon camera and using a speed light. It also covers everything you might want to know about light and photography.

He talks about the different Canon flashes, how to use them on and off camera, as well as mixing the various types of light.

Anyway, there are 380 pages of some of the best info you will ever see on how to light your photos.

For crying out loud!!, just get a canon 270ex. It will fit your budget, and I guarantee it will work! with your camera. Also it has as much power, as anything else in your price range, that positively will work; will have.

For the price the 270, is in no way weak. It just does not! have the power, of a $500 dollar unit.

try to identify one that sells for about twice what you can afford then try to find that model on e-bay. people often decide to move up then selltheir used stuff on e-bay. good stuff can often be found for about 1/2 new price. hint buy only from a seller with at least 90% positive feedback

If you try ebay make sure the seller will accept returns. Stay away from the "no return" sellers.
