the stabilizer will work, the AF may not. if your lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or greater, WITH the converter attached, then yes, the AF will work.

telecoverters come in two flavors, 1.4x and 2x. the 1.4x will cost you 1 stop of light, the 2x will reduce the light by 2 stops. if your lens is an f/4 at max aperture and you put a 2x converter on, you will lose AF. with a 1.4x, your AF will still work, but in either case, you will probably lose some image clarity and sharpness.

i have used converters, and for the most part, i leave them at home. for me, they simply cost too much in lost clarity to be worth using. in those instances where having 40% more reach means the difference between getting A shot or getting none at all, i suppose the TC would be useful, but i'm hard pressed to think of a situation where that would be the case.

I was told by B&H that there is not teleconverter for EOS lenses. Were they wrong?

Indeed--I had the wrong lens system. My mistake, not B&H!

Sharpness is important to me. That is one reason I wanted the converter, hoping to get a little closer to the subject, so I could focus better. Thanks for the information. You have given me some things to think about.

Thanks leo, I am actually undecided if this is what I really want to do. Not hearing good things about using a converter. I appreciate the information.

My lens is a Canon zoom 70mm-300mm with macro.

I have a 2 times converter that fits canon. It autofocuses up to 1/2 the zoom on each lens it is used on for example on a 300mm lens it autofocuses up to 150mm approx. One has to manual focus over the 150. Are you interested in buying one?
