Minimum Working Distance (lens front element to subject) to capture 1:1 magnification (life-size)
of a 90-mm macro lens is 135-mm = 5.3-inches;
of a 40-mm macro lens is 60-mm = 2.4-inches.

Advantage Tamron.

Generally the Tamron as it will be more versatile, but what camera are you using the lens on? Does it have a built in focus motor? Are you wanting the lens to AF as well? Which version of the Tamron, with or without the built in focus motor?...General questions will generate general answers. That said, the longer focal length offers more versatility as I first said...

The Tamron by far very versatile most days I don't have to change the lens it lends it self to almost all situations, very sharp.

The lens is a Tamron 90mm Sp Af f2.5 on the bottom it has 52EN SERIAL # 0006474 Japan. It also has an aperture ring but you can lock it down. It doent have VC. And it has a full and limit switch

Sounds like a standard Tamron 90-mm macro lens.

I'd go with the 90mm Tamron based on working distance. An additional 3 inches Working Distance doesn't sound like much, but in the world of macro, that is substantial. Pictures I have seen from the lens are very sharp.

Speaking of macro, you are going to need extension tubes or a tele-convertor to get 1:1 out of the lens. Tamron 90mm 2.5 AF is a 1:2 lens.

I have this lens. Used it with the Nikon 6T supplemental lens to get to 1:1

Is this your lens? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/800983629-USE/Tamron_AF272P_700_SP_90mm_f_2_8_Di.html

If so, it will capture 1:1 without additional tubes or optics.

Two Tamron 90mm f/2.5 lenses were made - one with the 55mm filter size, and one with a 49mm filter size (the 52B model). Both of them offer a 1:2 macro magnification

The Tamron 90-mm f/2.8 versions are 1:1.
The Tamron 90-mm f/2.5 versions are 1:2.
