I am new at photography and I have a nikon d3200. I would like to have just one lens for everything until I get better at picture taking. I would like a lens that zooms out and in close. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Best all-in-one lens for your body would be the Nikon 18-300mm
Hi, you didn't say if you had a lens ? But if you do, I would just use the one you have for now, until your feel comfortable with you skills. Just a thought.
damdannyboy :)
Probably a zoom like the 18-300. I've expanded to where I am starting to add prime (single focal length lenses) to my bag of tricks; but I started out with zooms. I still use them all the time also.

Cherryl- My D3200 has a tamron 70-300 on it all the time.
I have the 28-300mm and it's a very sharp lens. I also have a wide angle 10-24mm lens for things like Monument Valley and Grand Canyon and other wide open spaces.

Welcome to our forum. Consider used and refurbs. Unfortunately, there is no "one lens for everything." That's why we all have too many lenses. :D

There is no lens for everything. You have to decide what type of photography you want to do and purchase the appropriate lens. If you are new at photography, purchase a 50mm prime lens, and learn how to use it instead of playing with a slow zoom lens.
I think we need to know more about you, your existing lens, and the subjects that you like most, at this juncture. To photo-nuts, like the ones you are addressing in this forum, your question is too Broad. I agree with all of the answers you have provided, but they are very diverse.

Nikon 18-300 goes for close to $1000
Tamron 18-270 is less than $500
Of course the Nikon is sharper but for me I'd rather keep $500, maybe for another lens or a tripod or external flash or some software or a weekend getaway.
thanks everyone...I think I am going to take some classes first like was recommended...have signed up for one today! I take pictures of everything by the way...some at a distance, some up close so I just thought that there was a lens that could go both ways without taking the time to change it...Like I said I am new at this.
I do have a Tamron 70-300 but I didn't think it got close enough. Maybe I just need to know more
I agree that sometimes a 300mm lens is not adequate to capture that special shot of a bird or animal and you can't get close enough otherwise. For that reason I bought a point and shoot 'superzoom' camera (Nikon P510) to supplement my larger Nikon D3200. The little P510 has quite a reach, 42X, 1000mm optical plus 2X digital. I shot the attached image at a distance of about 30 feet.
