The first trestle they come to, they will disconnect the first engine and it will cross the trestle. Then the second engine will cross and reconnect to continue up the mountain.
Once they make it up to Cumbres Pass, they will not need two engines to pull the cars.
There is a youtube video that shows it. There are actually three engines in that video. The third one is farther back between some cars.
Here is the video.

In this video, you can see train chasers on the left side on the highway.

That is great Jay. Thanks. :-D
I have seen them separate the engines with the cars before but never disconnect the first engine.

Looks like they are going to have a double header again today.

They just backed up the other locomotive. Love watching the hand signals they use. And listening to the whistle signals.

Lots of photographers there.

I think this train is going to have a late departure.
Mechanic just went to the shop.
Passengers back at the depot......
Edit:
Now, looks like the shop crew has stepped away from the engines. I think the passengers have loaded and we are on time!

Wild rail vehicles! We're going to stay in Bryson City, NC for a week and ride the steam rail which runs from Dillsboro NC to Nantahala and back. Loco is early 40s vintage, originally coal, now an oil burner. I plan to take my Pentax K 5 and my YashicaMat for some photo ops.

There's also a rail line in Cass, WV which I'd love to visit again; the only time I've been there was when I was in my mid teens. It runs Shay engines, narrow gauge I think, and was used for logging and steep slopes. The boiler is offset to allow vertical cylinders driving a crankshaft geared with bevel gears to the drivers. Really wild. Here's a youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PsvY3TZkBQ and a link to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shay_locomotive Note that there seem to be operating Shays in the Northwest, in addition to the Cass Scenic RR. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Scenic_Railroad_State_Park
