I have a well used leitz 28mm -r- lens unfortunately doesn't focus anymore. Taking to the Leica people will cost me a fortune, probably not worth it. I would be very grateful if you could advise me otherwise. Thank you.

Is it just that the focusing ring no longer turns the barrel or is the barrel itself slipping?

The first is a simple fix which would cost very little the other would indicate that the focusing helicoid has separated. This is unlikely but if so probably forget it.

So just what part of the lens is not working?

Oliver.

Thank you Oliver. The barrel turns smoothly as always did, but does not focus. It's a pity because is a very good lens, one of the best. Regards.

You might contact Rick Riggins, a fellow Hedgehogger who has helped many of us with similar problems. He keeps prices reasonable for us.

Does the lens not focus or can you not see it change focus? I.e., could it be in your focus train instead of the lens itself?

You might want to contact Joe at Tempe Camera. He's the owner and best repair guy there. I had a Leica IIIf completely cleaned and rebuilt there about a year ago. The cost was quite reasonable, at least to me.
