This kookaburra was a regular visitor to our previous home and along with its family became quite tame. The victim here is a baby bandicoot (native marsupial) which was too big for the bird to eat. I actually witnessed its demise at the back of the garden - rather unpleasant.

For those that don't know a kookaburra is a large kingfisher; and do I mean LARGE. About as big as a small chicken with a powerful beak! This bird and its mate would swoop in from a tree and take a piece of meat from my hand without so much as touching me.

It did earn my ire once though when it swooped and nicked a sausage from my plate at a BBQ one day. It took its prize up onto a branch and proceeded to beat it to death as they are apt to do. Must have thought it was a huge worm or something!

Yeah, gruesome isn't it? Pity the poor thing (bandicoot) went to waste. I had to bury it. I even contemplated cutting it up and feeding it to the bird but my stomach turned...
