For some reason my canon sx40 won't autofocus when I zoom. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what can I do about it?
Thank You,
Bart

Did you have it on Macro at the time or manual focus? If the camera is set at. Spot focus, and you are aiming at the blue sky there is no contrast ing edge to focus on, check the properties on the photo to see the Apt setting , what mode did you shoot, my 30 used to have trouble focusing on the moon till I discovered there are tweets you can do on the non auto modes. On P M etc modes hit the settings button scroll down to my colors , then scroll right to "my colors" and hit display button , a screen will show up and you can adjust sharpness , contrast , red , blue, green , and saturation. The skies were washed out and the red ( on roses where too hot )
Take and review till you get what you see . On the sharpness I zoomed in on the image to see if I was going in the right direction.

For anyone to help, you should click the "save original " box so we can check the properties page to see what the setting on the camera was on that shot

You want answers to questions when you do not even bother to tell what lens you are using.

You obviously don't know what an SX40 is!! Bridge camera with 35x zoom built on!!

Previous comments are the first things to check. Post a picture and Store Original if you still need help.

when i stand a long ways away from the subject, it focuses wonderfully. however i did notice as well that when i am impatient, and zoom from far away, it doesnt focus immediately - it takes a bit for the camera to adjust. OR, I have had the camera in a different mode as well which causes frustration.

Don't forget that the closer you are to the subject, the less you can zoom. That might be an issue at times, but not with the mountain shot.

Usually, on many cameras, there is a collection of different focusing modes to choose from. Try a different one and see what happens.

Hope this helps. :)

Is this happening when you go into the digital mode of the zoom range? I have an SX40 and with mine when I go into the digital mode I usually have to be leaning against something or use my tripod as the least little movement will throw the focus off. Also..... the sun - the brightness from the sun will haze the photo too. I'm wondering if that is what happens with you - the brightness of the snow with the brightness of the sun maybe have been a little too much for the sensors.

See what the white around the geeses neck did to my picture when I had a real bright sun.

I forgot earlier - I always use manual but auto might do the same. Sometimes when I take a picture if I immediately move the camera right after I click it'll blur the photo. So what I do now is take the picture and hold the camera posed for about a 1/2 a second before moving it. The more I study your pictures the more I think this might be the case with you too.

Better call Canon or send it in for repair.
