End of Summer

Saturday morning I went for my run in the cold pouring rain. On the way back I saw that the Mikes Marina was almost gone. The boats were gone. The slips were gone. The gate with the little shed was gone. All that was left was the big dock and the seagulls. Our little town gets much smaller in the winter, and it's sad. The festive feeling of summer is gone. I stopped to get one last photo of the dock, before they tore that down too. I was using my umbrella to protect my gear, but it blew away from me, and I snapped this photo before retrieving it.

I apologize for the long story. It's been a short summer because of our late spring. I am hoping to share the feeling I have going into another Winter. C&C are welcome and appreciated.

No need to apologize. Not long really and very nice. Thanks for the feeling. Glad you got your umbrella before it went into the water. Made for a wonderful visual contrast between summer and winter. I'll soon have that haunting feeling again when we close down our little mountain visitor center for the winter. But then all the rivers, lakes, and forests go into their period of refreshment for another glorious spring and summer. You should try your hand at writing more if you don't already.

Thank you, Highlake. You are so right about the refreshment period. I love winter. Maybe it's just that I am getting older, or maybe because it was my first summer with my DSLR, but the thought of summer ending is harder for me this year. I love to write. Thank you.

Nice emotional shot, Nightski. Why not join the snowbirds (of which we used to be) and come south for a spell. I just couldn't stand the winters in NY any longer. ;-)

I like that photo and very well titled. Also like the story too. The season is in change here also. Walked in a favourite meadow today where there were once many butterflies and now only saw one. It turned out to be a rear one though, but I only got a very poor photo of it before it flew away. The trees are changing colour so I guess Autumn is something to look foreword too.

It is MickB. :-) It looks like our colors will be in full swing this week. That's something to look forward to. I knew you, of all people, would like the story. You seem to be the master of stories here at UHH.

Hey, I didn't realise you could do "evocative"! Apart from your description tugging at the heart strings, you've caught the mood nicely with your shot.

My only criticism is that we can't see behind the umbrella. I'm left wondering if there's somebody sitting behind it. If it had been at an angle, with nothing visible behind it, it would have emphasised the desolateness of the scene. Just MHO.
