Hi everyone,

Firstly, thank you for all your help and comments re NIKON D5100 DSLR and then Battery for same and finally lens.

I have now got the NIKON and have to say although its early days I am loving this camera,
the battery life isn't as bad as I thought, but then I don't use live view a lot, but I am going to sort out a spare battery for bigger shoots.
However, I am still looking for a used NIKON 55-200 lens ( as the 70-300 is out of my reach ) I'm almost totally convinced I will go NIKON for the VR it offers, unless you know a lens (cheap) that would match it ?

Hi everyone, br br Firstly, thank you for all you... (show quote)

Kinda disgusting, but good shot.

When I'm concerned about battery life, I shut off the automatic review on the LCD monitor. I seldom look at pictures after they're captured, so turning it off doesn't bother me.

The 55-200mm VR lens is a decent lens especially considering it has VR. Provides decent reach that the 18-55mm doesn't provide. Right now on the US ebay you can find them for about $100. I don't know what that translates to in the UK with it's VAT taxes and all.

You want good quality, but cheap. Wont happen. What type of photos do you take. Everyone gets hung up on a zoom lenses.

Google London Camera Exchange. They're not just London-based and they have a good reputation. You may find there's a store not too far from you.

I like this image real well. Nice autumn colors. I had a D5100 before I upgraded to the D7100. I think I run down the battery on the D5100 once (when I was playing mostly with settings and viewing) and had to change to my spare battery.

The 55-200 is a great lens for the price. I will be upgrading soon, but have been happy with results of this lens so far. I have the D5100 as well.

Check out the Tamron 70-300 VC lens. It's a really great lens.

$449 minus $100 rebate is expensive for a lens of this caliber? I don't think so. Maybe you are thinking of a different lens. I own this lens and it is one sharp lens plus the VC is in my opinion the very best out there.

He said he was thinking of going with Nikon. I don't think he's going to get a Nikon cheaper than the Tamron.

Oh, Graham, are you really considering a "kit" lens? I got the 55-200 as one of the two kit lenses bundled with my D3100. I fell right into the "kit is not good" trap and have been tryng to find a replacement for a year. I've tried half a dozen "cheap" replacements and nothing I have found beats the 55-200 for image quality, especially at the longer lengths. Is there better? Fer sher, if yu wanna spend $1000 (don't know what that weighs in pounds, but it's a bunch).

Personally, I think Nikon's 55-200 is generally underrated and fortunately for you there are a bunch of them out there for $100-150 from folks who are trying to upgrade.

Go for it and enjoy!
