One of a kind. He owned a liqueur store around the corner from me on The Alameda. This was in the early '70's. He would drink a case of beer while telling stories at the store. Funny man.

hoppie...The game has changed. My Dad played at Michigan in the late 30's. There were NO facemasks. One of his teammates broke his nose 13 times. Rules were different, too. If a runner went out of bounds, the ball was placed down just inside the out of bounds marker. They hadn't come up with the hashmarks yet. Both teams wore dark jerseys, which is why Fritz Crizler put the winged helmet on Michigan players....so the qb could find his ends downfield.

Thanks for the video. Reminds me of the days of the tough guys like Bronco Nagurski.

That was hilarious. I sure miss Johnny Carson. He was the best. I need to get a copy of Art's book to read.

I played high school foot ball back in the mid 40s. We wore leather helmets, no face masks. the only time a guy had a face mask was when he played with a broken nose and even than it was only one bar they screwed on to the helmet. And we nevar had the two platune system. We played both offence and defence. I played man\y 60 min. games without ever comeing out of the game. Now I get a kick out of when the talking heads say those poor guys on defence been on the field a long time. When I came out of the navy in the 50s I was asked to play on a local town team. They only payed $20 a game and payed your ins. I turned them down. If I got a broken bone they wouldnt pay me for being out of work. I couldnt take that chanch. I had a wife and son plus a morgage to pay. I still love to watch the game and yell at the TV.

Hal...I still remember in the 50's when the refs would write down any substitution. Free substitution really changed the game. The photo of the Michigan team from my Dad's playing days is a small number of players compared to the two platoon system of today. A hundred players, numerous coaches, managers and trainers. Crisler asked my Dad to help with the coaching staff in 1940 along with Archie Kodros. He joined Wally Webber, Bennie Oosterbaan, and Clarence "Biggie" Munn (of later MSU fame) among others. The total coaching staff was seven as I recall. Dad and Wally Webber worked with the freshmen. 1940 was the year that Tom Harmon and Forest Evashevski lost one game, to Minnesota in the rain and mud, 7-6. Rain and mud was the only thing that could stop Harmon.

Yes Steve its a differant game today. A good friend of mine was a trainer with the philly Eagles in the 50s. he said when the guys came into training camp they were so out of shape. They looked like fat slobs. It took most of training camp just to get them in shape to play. They had one loud mean tackle that never shut up. One day at lunch he came in sat down didnt say a word and was just playing with his food. The other guys said whats wrong Tim? He opened his mouth and a live bird flew out. These guys were tough.

Yes he knew all the players on the team. When the Eagles played in Franklen Field it is where the penn U. Played. On a sat. we went down to see a Penn Columba Game. We had seats on the 45 yard line. A play came right toward us and it was a clasic tackle.. The very next day we went down to see the Eagles. We had seats only about five yards from where we sat for saturdays game. And here comes a Giant player running towards us. And hears comes big Al Wistert running right toward him at full bore, He left his feet about 4 yards away and hit the guy in the air. Both nees in the guys chest wtih his arms around the guys helmit. It sounded like a car crash. He walked away but the Giant player didnt get up. On the way home we said, what a deferants between collage ball and pro.
