All it has to do is hold the battery. I use a Chinese one on my D800e. The only problem with all of them including the Nikon one is that the grip shutter release is in a position where you accidentally trigger it all the time. The only solution is to turn the grip controls off.

Otherwise, well worth it.

When you say, "a battery pack".......are you referring to a battery grip ?

You will get many people telling you that "it's a good thing", that they "work great", etc, etc, etc, At one point, I had considered buying a "third party" battery grip;

Several things changed my mind; I get "fired up" every now and then and get to thinking about why I "need" this or that "gadget"; of all the "hardware" and other "gadgets" that I've bought, the single purchase that I've made that has helped me more than everything else, put together........was David Busch's manual for MY camera; this guy knows more about Nikon cameras than anyone else I've ever known, heard about, or read about.

One of the things he talks about in this fantastic manual is......exactly what you are asking about ! It's very detailed, and after reading the whole thing, I'm now glad that I didn't buy a "third party" battery grip. Something that's even worse, is buying third party lithium batteries that say "Nikon", but are NOT MADE by Nikon; (that can turn out to be a REAL bummer!) There are several good reasons to use a battery grip, (such as to increase the "burst rate" of certain bodies), but I very seldom use the max burst rate I get from one ENEL3 battery, and I have 4 of them, so it's not likely that I'll running out of battery power any time soon.

If you really are seriously considering buying a third party grip, I would definitely suggest getting a copy of David Busch's manual for the D 7000, and read what I'm talking about. (Believe me, regardless of which Nikon camera you own, when you read this guy's manual on it, you'll find out a lot of things that you never even thought about asking about!

It is only a grip which holds the battery. The OP is talking about spending $50 on one not $230. And for another $20 plus postage you can read David Busch's manual.

Gimme a break.

What did YOU just say, that I didn't just say? I already KNOW it's "just a grip to hold a battery"; which is PROBABLY why they call them "battery grips", don't you suppose ? And the $50 PLASTIC ones from China are rather "flimsy", as opposed to the ALUMINUM ones that Nikon charges $250 for, right ?

You say you already have a plastic one from China ? That's great! I hope you enjoy it! ( Bye !)

I never said I had a plastic one from China. You are just making stuff up.

The one I have is magnesium, just like the Nikon one. Made in China, just like the Nikon one.

Good answer. They all come from China. Sometimes they are partialy assembled in the US, Canada or UK. Gets them around import duties. Just my 2 cents.

I only use genuine Nikon grips - pricey yes But i look at it this way Why put a cheaper solution on with known issues of breakage etc. Sure its just a battery holder until the clip breaks , the lock doesn't hold, the selector fails, the buttons stick. Nikons over priced - yes But you do get what you paid for!! your choice and only YOU have to justify it to yourself

I have a Zeikos grip on my D300 for about 3 years now. It works great and I paid $55 for it. Use it for personal and pro work. If you think about it, at that price you could get 4 of them for the price of one Nikon and have backups. Even the Nikon could fail. Always have backup....

Untrue

So you say don't buy tamron sigma hahnel Metz sunpak errrrrrr

I have never ever had a days trouble with third party grips ever. Why buy canon and Nikon they all only have a 12 month free even Nikon grips

I'll take the hahnel label off my grips put them next to Nikon and you tell one from another. Oh you can in fact. Hahnel has a built in it remote and trigger £80

TA.....I didn't say that YOU said that YOU had a "plastic one made in China"; When YOU said YOU had one "made in China", I "assumed" that it was plastic, inasmuch as ALL of the ones that I had previously looked at, WERE made of plastic, don't 'cha see?

After I determined that In didn't NEED one for what I do, I have since paid scant attention to what ANY of them are "made of".

And NO, I wasn't "making anything up".

Yes you did. Go back and look at what you posted. And you are still making things up. You have nothing to contribute to this thread other than to denigrate those who try to help.

Just quit while you are behind.
