I finally bit the bullet and purchased this lens. It was advertised on craigslist so I met the seller in a nearby McDonalds. Of course I had to try it out prior to purchasing. I found this young man munching on french fries and asked him if he'd let me take a couple of pics.

I do like this lens. These were taken at 70mm, f/2.8, iso 320 at 1/320 sec.

Thanks Don. The main focus of No. 2 is on the wrong eye, but both were taken on the fly, between crispy fries and a Big Mac, so overall I'm rather pleased with the result.

As always, any suggestions on how the original photos could have been improved are welcome.

That's a great lens. I shoot 95 percent of my portraits with that lens. This is good natural light just what I look for. The only thing I would suggest is to shoot longer around the 150-185mm mark. You should be able not to crop so much.(In half it looks like)
Just fill the frame. I usually try to move my subject away from the background.....That can be a little tougher to keep your subject in the shade.

All in all.. nice shot(s).

You got a great lense I guess the $$ price was just right too? I can't seen to find deals like you did. I did buy the 70-200mm f4 IS verision which I like a lot, half the weight and price too.

Craigslist can surprise you - in a lot of ways. I like it because you can see/feel the merchandise up front, test it, and make a more informed decision. That having been said, if there is some hidden flaw that turns out to be serious, you may not have any way to ever find the seller again.

But I have been very fortunate to have found some really good deals. Just don't be in a hurry.

Yes that is true you are a lucky one just the same! If you do have a problem you still have Canon standing behind the lens which is a good thing don't you think? By the way have you tryed to get it registered in you name with Canon? As the new owner!

I love everything about that first one. The chopped off hat bothers me though. Keep in mind, I have never done any portrait work. I'm just looking through the people section to learn. So feel free to tell me I'm wrong about that

I look at the first shot and initially I see a young man who has the world by the tail, and has all the answers to life's tough questions allready figured out, As I look some more, I see a young man with a future full of mistakes and wrong choices not yet made, I like the 'story' you tell about this young man in this shot, the light is good and technically it's quite OK, but it's really about what you're able to tell us about the kid in the cowboy hat. I look again and behind all his macho posturing, I see a young man who is vulnerable and unsure of himself - in many ways, I see myself many years ago and I find myself wanting to say to him that it's OK, I was young once myself, and I survived it.
