I really enjoy photographing Bald Eagles. I have a chance to buy a used Sigma AF 400mm F5.6 for under $175. Is anyone familiar with this lens? I haven't seen it yet, but if it is in good condition, is this a good quality lens?

I have experimented with long lenses form top-notch
to lenses people would throw way due to the funny name.
and I have been very surprised at the quality of lenes
compared on to the other.
I use many Sigmas and have yet to be disappointed.
If I were you I'd buy it.

For that price, you can't go wrong, assuming that it's working.

If you buy one of those older Sigma 400's just make sure it is the AF 400mm APO version, it was extremely sharp where the non-APO versions were notoriously soft.

Thanks for your input everyone. MT; how can I tell if it is APO?

Compared to a Nikon 400mm / f5.6, the Sigma is 30% less. There must be a reason. You are comparing price only.
