While hiking in the flat tops wilderness area this hawk appeared, did a couple passes just above us before rising off in a thermal. Can anyone identify this hawk, thought maybe a coopers hawk ?

Looks like a Broad-winged Hawk to me. That's the only hawk in Colorado having that number of dark and light bands across the tail. Not a bad photo for so far away!

I e-mailed a picture of this hawk to the director of the Nature raptor center of pueblo, where I am a member. She identified it as a Northern Harrier. Looking in national geographic North American bird book it's a perfect match, especially the head.

Thank you Oldmalky - When I first saw this hawk changed my MODE setting to U2, where I have my BIF settings saved. and the release mode to CL. Took 15 photos in 25 seconds, then the hawk took off in a thermal.

Indeed, she is right, I have misidentified the Hawk.

I had a hard time identifying this hawk, that is why I e-mailed the NRCP. I want to thank you for all the help you have provided me. The BIF section has helped me learn how to handle BIF photo's. The most important aspect I have learned is to store my BIF settings into 'U2' on the mode dial on my Nikons. This allows me to switch in a instant to my BIF settings. Also using the UHH search to get answers to most of my questions. Thanks again for all your help still a DSLR novice.
