I am using a Canon 7D and am seriously looking at the EF 400mm f4 DO IS USM lens with a 1.4 extender and would love to hear from anyone who has or is using this lens with their 7D. My aim is to try and get closer to the wildlife without disturbing them so any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I like the idea of the 400 DO, but I have to tell you, in general, it is not held in high regard with many serious shooters, though I have not personally used one. You can google and find plenty of opinions on the net I am sure. What I can tell you is that I use the Canon 300 2.8 original without IS with Canon 2X II on 60D and the results are astounding ! See my site for examples. Probably the same weight and bulk as the 400 DO.
I have one and love the clarity and sharpness of this prime lens. It is fairly lightweight (compared to my 70-200) and I love the built-in hood. I use it mostly on my 7D. I have not used an extender with it.
I don't think you can go wrong if you purchase this lens.
I would personally go for the 300 2.8, the 400 2.8, or the 500 4 over the 400 DO 4 for wildlife. Any of those can successfully be used in conjunction with the 1.4.
All are fairly heavy though if weight is an issue.

Yes weight is a major factor. I already have the 100-400mm L lens which is a fantastic lens but as I said I am just trying to get closer without disturbing the wildlife. Would love to get the 500mm lens but not only is it very heavy but the price also is way out there. Thanks for your input.

Many thanks for the article I have put it to one side to read thru thoroughly - appreciate you giving me that info.
Here -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pas-GiB9jzo - is a 2 hour video by Artie Morris - he talks about the 400 DO about half way through ( as well as all other Canon lenses). It is a spellbinding video. Keep in mind he is a spokesperson for Canon so re rarely says anything bad....

Trish, go to, 'the digital picture', and read his review. I just assume it's not so new that it's been reviewed.
Don't trust hearsay and guesses.
Good luck. SS

Thanks for the input about the review - have just read it and it does sound good - photography sure is an expensive hobby but what fun it is. Thanks again.
After having reread some of the better/later reviews of the DO - here is my take: The only REAL advantage that I see of the 300 2.8 with TC's over the DO is the original 300 non IS version like I have is way cheaper and a tinsey sharper near the corners especially on full frame. I believe the IQ's really to be so close as undiscernable. The DO has an older style IS - but really, I would leave it turned OFF ( especially with a 1.4TC and because it can slow AF ) and put it on a well articulated monopod - even though it is theoretically hand holdable - for the ergonmic advantage if nothing else! This is completely different from most people who value the DO for "hand hold abilities" with the IS. Because of the lighter weight and size, the DO is better for BIF. If I had the money I would by one ! But the older style 300 2.8 non IS with TC is CHEAPER.
The 400mm F4 will not autofocus with the extender attached. If you're shooting subjects in motion you will be frustrated.
