America's Guns out of Control?

Taken from the Observer [United Kingdom] - the oldest Sunday newspaper in the world - founded 1791. Has always prided itself on its independence.

Headline for an article written by Henry Porter-
"American gun use is out of control. Shouldn't the World intervene?" [September 22nd 2013]

[Excerpt]
"The annual toll from firearms in the US is running at 32,000 deaths and climbing, even though the general crime rate is on a downward path (it is 40% lower than in 1980). If this perennial slaughter doesn't qualify for intercession by the UN and all relevant NGOs, it is hard to know what does.

To absorb the scale of the mayhem, it's worth trying to guess the death toll of all the wars in American history since the War of Independence began in 1775, and follow that by estimating the number killed by firearms in the US since the day that Robert F. Kennedy was shot in 1968 by a .22 Iver-Johnson handgun, wielded by Sirhan Sirhan. The figures from Congressional Research Service, plus recent statistics from icasualties.org, tell us that from the first casualties in the battle of Lexington to recent operations in Afghanistan, the toll is 1,171,177. By contrast, the number killed by firearms, including suicides, since 1968, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the FBI, is 1,384,171."

The full article can be found on the Observer web site, either under the headline given above or "Should we intervene in US gun use?"

We in the UK should not interfere in the US.
We have our own problems in Ireland with militant Muslims and over immigration.

I think folks don't have any values any more. Life is not worth a whole lot right now. Why is the question!!! Parents, schools??? Get back to the church and learn the value of life!!

I'll say this again:

{The late} TED Kennedy's car has killed more people than any of my guns !!

I still sleep very soundly at night too. None of my guns have woken up and killed me or anyone else in my house.

"America's Guns out of Control?"

I keep hearing about 'Gun Control' and have worried myself gray headed over it.
I've spent days watching mine ... they don't do a thing except lay there.

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO TO CONTROL THEM?

Yesterday I put my gun on a chair on my front porch. It stayed there all day long. When I brought it in last night it hadn't moved from it's original position, no one had been shot, nor had it done anything else that would be threatening or harmful. As Murm said, you should be more worried about your doctor.

I wonder how many people are killed annually by people driving and texting? We will never know because even politicians and lawyers do it.

With headlines like this maybe I should buy another gun, perhaps an AR-15.

Come and get'em...

Send them to me Robert! I will train them for you. Mine are very well behaved. They only do what I want them to. They get kind of loud once in a while. But they get quiet after a bit. Either that or give them more exercise> :):):)

Taken from the Observer United Kingdom - the old... (show quote)

Tell you what Allan,

You want to intervene here in the US? Give it your best shot....because I will give you mine!

If you really ever do want to try something that stupid and arrogant, please do it yourself. Don't go sending some poor members of your military to do something so idiotic! You want to be stupid? Lay your own life on the line!

And another useless thread where folks will not exchange anything useful but trade barbs and ultimately disagree to disagree.

Sometimes I wonder if this gun debate should not be debated once and for all at the point of an epee, the old fashion way, mano to mano and feel the other die when killing him.

Guns remove that experience you know...

If anyone reads my first post carefully, they will see that I gave no opinions regarding the article its headline or its content. This was intentional. My only comment was that The Observer is an internationally respected newspaper/journal.

It just goes to show how many people on this forum blast off at the slightest [perceived] provocation.

If anyone thinks I might ever reflect opinions of the English, Lwydd is a Welsh term; we have many areas of disagreement with the Sisleg [our equivalent of the Scots Sassenach].

Although I live in East Anglia, I am very proud of my Welsh descent. Economic necessity led to my teaching in England, rather than Wales [ALL Welshmen wanted to teach in Wales, but too few jobs for too many applicants]. If you want to see how we feel about the English, watch the annual Wales versus England Rugby Union match.
