I think I may have the wrong info on adaptors from fd llenses to an eos body. Can some one let me know what the changes to focal length and appachure would be. thanks in advance

I have never used one, and I have never seen or read anything about them changing focal length or losing light - but since they have an optical element, I would not rule it out in some small insignificant way.

The optical element is a "correction" element - to eliminate the problem created by the extra space of the adapter.

Yes, I know. The original adapter that Canon made was actually a very mild TC - something like 1.25. But since there is an optical element, in may be doing things IN ADDITION to adjusting for the infinity focus - subtle things - like changing focal length...

Boberic, I'm not sure I'm understanding your question.
I've never used a glassed adapter, but since it's lengthening the light path, I think you will get a light f-stop drop. Probably proportional to the length of a 1.4x or 2x converter.
Somebody willing to go full manual probably isn't that worried of a stop or two of light since that's an action concern. Not gonna shoot much action on bad manual focus(w/o ground glass).
Don't know if that helped. SS

Witht he adaptor all my old fd glass comes back into play. Not that moch concerned about speed cause the lenses are 1.4 or 2.8 I will try to counter lack of is with shutter speed. manual focus isn't a problem cause I have been manually focusing for about 40 + years. Iso will come into the mix also. Toc heck out focal tength I think I will do a set of comparisons with my ancient F=1 and see how the adaptor affects length.

This is why the FD lens on EOS bodies is a difficult pairing.
"The reason corrective optics were needed at all is that on top of the actual EF mount being physically different, the lens registration distance was increased from 42mm in FD to 44mm in the new EF mount. "

This is a good explanation of the two lens and such "BUT" why do all you guys who "HAVE NOT" used these adapters like myself and others, keep pounding out "It Dose not work" or the naysayers keep saying don't try it because so and so says it don't work.
Get the facts right - these adapters DO work on my Rebel 350d & 400d with quality FD lens - several of them.

Harvey, talking about what one doesn't know is a favorite past time here on the Hog.
I read it all the time, without glass, you can't get infinity focus. I used to use two lenses on glassless adapters, and now use just one, an FD 600.
The other common rant is ditch the kit lenses and get L glass. Nothing wrong with that, but they don't shoot any better, and in some cases shot worse.

Thank you, I just purchased a Canon 50mm FD mount lens for $20.00. It is very clean and the glass looks very good. I think I will try either the Zykkor or the Fotodiox adaptor. The price of the 5mm auto focus lens is more than I want to pay right now, and I read that the 50mm FD mount lens works well with the T3i for shooting video, so I think I will just experiment.

Sisko, if you wanted to get a little technical, disassemble your fifty and remove the detent system on the f-stop ring. You can then smoothly work the DoF, like they do in the movies.
Good luck
