I just bought a WACOM Intuos Medium (Amazon, $369) and am learning how to use if effectively. It's WAY more difficult than I expected, and I have a hint for those who (like me) are a little shaky and directionality-challenged: work on VERY enlarged pieces of your image.

Hi RamRam I also could use the hint you are talking about. I also just bought a tablet, not a Wacom but a Monoprice. I also am in the process of trying to become efficient at it..............Mike

There is an inherent learning curve, especially with the difference in how we used to navigate relative to our monitor size with our 'old' mouse and now have to with our 'new' pen.

For post processing in Aperture, LightRoom, od Photoshop, It took me about 2-3 weeks part-time (Much unlike Cliff's 10 minute claim) as I am just that, a part-time photographer.

One thing I ran into was not understanding my software to it's fullest. The tablet (I use an intuous5-medium) will exacerbate that 'need to learn' the software, especially when using your pen to navigate menus and the like.

I use a MacBookPro to import/process photos, and have had my tablet about 6 months now, and I feel I have finally hit my stride and am finally at ease with the tool. I work a 9-5 and shoot on weekends. So, if someone is shooting all week, take my siux months, divide by seven and possibly a realistic time frame for someone as naive as I was regarding a tablet may be proficient in a month.

Just my $.02 and bottom line, now I cannot live without my tablet, or better to say, if this one breaks, I will buy another.

Best,

Ben

It's nothing arcane: just enlarge the piece of the image you want to work on as much as it will handle without falling apart. Then after working the pen around a given piece of the selection. use your mouse to move the image to a new section. I'm a little shaky, and this helps keep the icon within 'snapping' range (gives me more room for error)..
