Vague? OK I'll try again. To me a photograph is made some time before one raises the camera to one's eye. Art, equally, is created long before the creation is commenced. Some of what I have seen posted about, applying presets to a rather ordinary pic is as much art as if Michelangelo were to create the Mona Lisa in the manner that a child plays with Mister Potato Head.

Michelangelo didn't paint the Mona Lisa but I get your point.

I think that the art of photography is really what happens before the shutter button in pushed. I believe the art is what the photographer does to make the photo turn into what he "sees" with head. When someone goes to extra work to place lights in a certain position or place for a specific affect, that is the art sometimes. Being able to take an idea and turn it into a reality with the camera is the true art. Very rarely do I consider a photo "art", it might be a great photo that I get an emotional response from or maybe I think it is a great representation of the place at that moment in time. In my opinion, a great photo doesn't take a lot of post prod work to improve it, maybe a little tweaking, but once again that is up to each persons opinion of what that is. Likewise I don't consider every painting a work of art, just a painting. I don't care for Picasso's art but I do believe that the thought process that went into what he was creating was art. Just my opinion.

Art to me is the expression or application of creative skill and imagination. Art is the result of having some sort of intent, not the result of accident or gimmickry.

I suppose it could be argued then, that no photography is art, since it consists of capturing something that already exists using a "gimmick" (Film, image sensors, what have you).

winterrose...I don't know why you get so upset with what others do anyhow. Is your world worse off because some choose to use an editing program? Does it make you physically ill? Does it cost you money? Do you go running for cover when you view them? What?

Let people do what they wish with their own creations. Wanting to criticize their efforts says way more about you than it does about them.

And with that in mind, I'm gonna post one of my 'art' pieces!
Who could claim that is not art? Worthy of a spot over my sectional. The camera, lens and software are your medium. Like paints and brushes nothing is created until picked up and used. Art is creativity. It doesn't have to be great art. A child can do a finger painting and that is art. A poop on a cinder block could be shown in an avant garde art gallery and be considered art. We have visual arts, audio arts, theater arts, industrial design art, computer generated art, photographic art, commercial art, fine art, not so fine art, modern art, not so modern art, folk art and Art Garfunkel.

When Andy Warhol painted that Campbell's tomato soup can was that art? Someone obviously thought so if they were willing to pay millions for it. Art is in the eye of the beholder. When I look at my toaster, I see art. When I look at a piece of toast I don't see art unless I take a butter knife and scratch in a likeness of Jesus. Anyone interested. $200 takes it . PayPal only. One of a kind.

Just to expand on the theme a little, how about the Australian bower bird's art? It has all of the elements of creativity required, and it looks better than many installations in contemporary galleries.
The art of nature is the most amazing, inspirational and beautiful art of all. The art man creates is part of that.

"Masters of photography?

What are they doing so tampering with the image they photographed?

That isn't art! "

Didn't Ansel Adams do a lot of "retouching" (dodging, burning-in, cropping)?

Oh yeah, but he was no artist.

Hmm This thread has gotten long and this may have been said already, but some times great (artistic?) photos are just a matter of being in the right place at the right time with camera in hand and knowing how to use it. I'm reminded of some of the iconic shots of the 20th century - the Hindenburg disaster, the crying Frenchman during World War II, General Nguyen Ngoc Loan shooting that handcuffed prisoner in Viet Ham.
