Our trip to north-east USA is imminent! We will be touring to include Boston, Kennebunkport, Jackson and Cape Cod.

First two weeks of October will see me going mad with the camera, but my wife simply wants to know 'what to wear?'

Is it likely to be cold, wet, windy, sunny or what?

Any advice on what to pack gratefully received.

Well, it's not all that bad. Weather can be cool in New England in October for sure. Pack some sweat shirts or insulated jackets. Carry an umbrella or have it available. October can be moderate temps, lots of sun and brilliant foliage. Have you thought of the White Mountains or Mount Washington area ? North Conway is beautiful for foliage at that time.
Seacoast of New Hamphsire has Portsmouth as a coastal city along with the ones you mention in Maine.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your trip.

I am leaving to visit my daughter who lives in Springfield, VT, after I attend my 50th high school reunion in Boston next week. There is no place in New England that isn't pretty.

FYI....I always go to Weather.com and see what kind of weather they project, cause they are never wrong. But at least you will get an idea of the temperatures. Good luck.

Boston & Cape Cod shouldn't be too cold, although they can be wet; however shelter in the way of a good Pub won't be too far away.

Portsmouth,Kennebunkport, ME will be considerably cooler and with more chances of snow and/or a Nor'easter. The further north (actually ME is North East or "down east")you go the more the chance of snow.

Jackson will be colder and there is a good possibility of snow in November.

We lived in Andover, MA--20 miles north of Boston--for 32 years, and it was not unusual to have snow before Thanksgiving; more north more snow.

No matter what the weather, enjoy your trip!

Early October can be rainy, quite cool or sunny and warm. Boston is usually warmer and sunnier than places farther north. Cape Cod can be very windy as well as all the above. Plan on layers because the weather can be very changeable. You might also think about bringing a rain sleeve for your camera. This would also be handy on Cape Cod to help keep some of the sand out if it is windy.

On the way to Maine get off the Interstate and take the highway along the coast through some of the small towns along the coast.

Good quality and comfortable thermal wear (I prefer Merino Wool - Icebreaker; others available)+ some sweattops / rugby shirts / fleecy tops and an outer. Waterproofs handy but you can buy good wp's out there if needed. I bought Sierra designs for $35.00 when we did Blue Ridge parkway etc. and they are still going well now, 2 years later.

Optech camera sleeves £8.00 for 2 from Amazon BEFORE you go in case you don't encounter a camera shop.

It's likely to be all of the above...especially if you do any hiking to remote waterfalls and mountain tops..

It can be cold northern Ny saw some temps around the low 30's last week. You can find snow during that time so take layers...a shell is always nice to carry

All good advise above. But I would consider a more free approach. Let your heart be your guide. Follow your nose, don't think that you have to hit every 'tourist' appointed spot. Find the least travelled areas, the most honest and serene routes. You will find the most magnificent pictures to take, if you see them. DJT

Layered clothing is a must, as is rain gear for both photographer and equipment, including a rain cover for your backpack. New Hampshire in October is stunning, beautiful foliage oft juxtapose against snow in the high country. I noticed your location check list mentioned Jackson, I am assuming NH. While the Presidential Range side of the White Mountains is dramatic I would be remiss not to inform you there are far greater photo opportunities in Franconia Notch (Canon Tram, The Flume, The Basin, Profile Lake, Pemigewasset River ....................................,. The coast this time of year offers a terrific chance to photograph migratory birds. When in the Kennebunk Area pay particular attention to the areas within the Rachael Carson National Wildlife Refuge (around Parson's Beach, Mousam River, Back Creek..............................
Enjoy New England!!!!!!
