When I was talking to the train guys at the cog wheel train, they told me about this steam train, not too far away.
Turned out this train is about 35 miles away.
I was ready to go!
My wife was steam trained out from the day before and she said to go by myself. I love that Woman!!!
I didn't know what to expect. It turned out this engine was a Climax engine. And it burned wood!! My first wood burner!
Second steam train for this trip. I'm grinning!!!
I was a little disappointed that it was hooked up to the rear of the cars. What's up with that? I was told in the timber business, the trains travel forward and backwards due to no turn around facilities. Ok.
The Climax is unique in that, the steam cylinders are mounted on the side and at an angle. The cylinder action is attached to a "differential" type gear box mid way under the engine. Then, there is a driveline to goes all axles under the engine and the tender. A ring & pinion gears transfer the power to the axles.
Also, this train is part of the Clark Trading Post in Lincoln, NH. Clarks is a neat place for young and old. Several child activities, antiques for adults and a trained black bear show.
If you can make it to this area, you have two steam trains.

I got to talking to this guy and asked him where the other guy was. He said he was it.
So, I asked if he needed a sidekick on this next run as I had purchased a ticket. He said sure.
So, I got to ride in the cab. I had to stay in one out of his way area. It was hot with the fire box right there. But, I got the bragging rights to say I was there!

For entertainment, they had a Wildman that didn't like the train traveling thru his woods. He chased us in his "rat rod".
Which I liked.

The jaws on the front of the Rat Rod opened and closed.
Didn't get a shot with them open.
That's the last of the images.

Neat pictures. Gotta love steam. Is the hood on that rat rod made from a 9n ford tractor hood?

Great photos and story Pat. Very unique train and car. In your cab photo it looks like the guy had his chicken sandwitch in a bag on top the fire box to keep it warm.

I would love to Pat. But being the caregiver for my very ill wife the only photos I can get now are in my own yard.
