P & S Camera Recommendations

I am in the market for a point and shoot camera that I can carry in my pocket that will provide decent images and doesn't cost an arm and a leg ($700). I would like some medium magnification. I have two Canon DSLR's, but I don't limit myself to only Canon products.

I would welcome any recommendations from you all. I trust you more than the various web sites available.

Thank you.

I just bought my wife an Olympus TG 320; have not yet processed her pix, but I have several Oly's and like them all, especially my SP 800 UZ. The 320 is about the size of a deck of cards. My 800 is a bit larger; would fit in a patch pocket. I carry my 800 in my hand or around my neck--you never know when a picture is going jump out and attack ; gotta be ready.
**BTW You look enough like a church friend to be a brother; amazing ! ( Was your father ever in Indiana ?) Alyn

Actually I never knew my father, he left when I was 2, 66 years ago, so he could have been in Indiana.

Check out the Panasonic models. I got a small model with 10x optical zoom that does a great job! Very easy to fit in pocket, but I got a hardshell case to hook on my belt.

I also vote for Panasonic, but Canon S100 is good too, however often does not have the zoom that a Panasonic has.

I think it comes down to do you want a optical view finder. I would not own a camera without one. I want a camera I can use in bright light and in not so good light. That means a OVF.

Thus, for your price range I would look at the new Canon G16. It has all the bells and whistles as a DSLR - raw, jpeg, manual, etc. DP has a great review on them.

Lastly, it uses the same menus as your current DSLRs so the learning curve is about nil.

I just got the Sony DSC-RX100. It's a "24/7" - ie is in my pocket all the time and is much more than a "point and shoot" although it does that admirably. Check out snapsort.com for comparisons/reviews. Lots depends on what you want in a camera. I'm not a serious photographer, but I do take lots of photos and put together books on our travels so a good 24/7 (coined by a UGH member)was key.

Mike: Sorry to read your sad history; life is tough. Looks like you made through.
Indiana is a nice place to visit; not much to do--just sit back and watch the world go by. Alyn

Actually over the years I have been to Indiana many times. I had a cousin who lived in Terre Haute then Indianapolis. Great state and a straight shot on I-70 from where I live.

Any of the newer X-series by Fuji should give you excellent results.

It's not a point and shoot but... Olympus PEN E-PL5 micro-4/3 which is mirrorless and comes with a 14-42mm lens (28 to 84mm equivalent in the 35mm film world). Image quality equal to most crop sensor dSLRs including Canon. $599 total price - $549 if you watch for a sale. They also have a 14-150mm lens available but that would bring you up to about $750. Olympus makes bayonet mounted converters to go on the front of the 14-42mm II-series lens for telephoto, another for wide angle, and another for super close macro. They're not cheap crap but excellent quality optically.

The PEN is very small, very light, and the lens only sticks out about two inches from the body when it's retracted. I've got one and I'm using it almost strictly for real estate indoor HDR/Fusion work although I've shot outdoors a little and it's equally at home doing any of that. Read reviews of it and you'll see it's a very versatile, fine quality, built like a tank, serious piece of equipment with an optional viewfinder if you want to buy one later, a hot shoe that I believe is Pentax compatible and certainly Panasonic G series compatible, and comes with premium glass - for an exceptional price.
