Well, here's my 2centworth; My Voigtlander had a leather case which stayed on it. However the brand name case I bought for my z980 offers much better padding, but more importantly, since every surface of the camera except the bottom is covered with screens, buttons, and controls, a fitted case would be out of the question. Even my old A1s with the motor drives wouldn't have worked out with the leather case. Now for my car seats,, that's another story.
I've seen quite a few cameras in my lifetime and many of them were sold used with their original cases, particularly the German cameras. The fit and finish of these very durable cases always had me wondering if the cameras were designed after the case so they fit snuggly into them.
I do miss that all metal quality and feel of those German cameras.
I was a combat correspondent in the Marines, 1977-95 and always used a chrome-body camera in the field. Personally, I think the added protection of a leather case would have been nice!
I agree a tad of snobbery is in the wind here. If a person enjoys using a leather case, it's definitely stereotyping to mark him or her as an amateur. And if the person is an amateur, I think it's great that we have a photographer having a good time. :-)
