Hello, I am new to this site, just finding it this morning on my Google daily home page as it announced a lady artist in Toronto Ontario. My name is Mark Seibold. I still reside in the Portland Oregon area, my original home town for 57 ½ years now.
How many of you will attempt to go out in possible freezing temperatures this coming Saturday morning from 5 ~6 AM in the Western US Pacific Coast to capture a rare total eclipse of the moon? As a semi-professional and amateur astronomer most of my entire life [and recently retired early from the computer industry], award winning photography and published pastel art in NASA websites, I will probably make a multi-faceted attempt to do several images in photography of the lunar eclipse with my Sony NEX5 and also through a sophisticated Celestron Nexstar 5i Cassegrain telescope; or I may also be working on pre-preparing a large pastel sketch of the event as seen over the Portland Oregon downtown city skyline to possibly post to the NASA Spaceweather website just before the event to alert others to observe it.
I'll look forward to hearing what photographic ideas others will share here before Saturday December 10th 2011.
Thank you,
Mark Seibold
PS: Ill attach a variety of images, both as the public astronomy that I provide regularly, the photography, and a recent large 22 X 30 pastel sketch I produced from direct observation through the telescope eyepiece for several hours on one evening.
I posted a similar thread asking where is a good location to take these pictures. I am also in the Portland, Oregon area.
I had an amazing view of the moon this morning. As it was setting behind the Lewis and Clark bridge on the Columbia river. But being that I'm a beginner none of my photo's do it justice. I didnt know about the eclipse, Thank you for the info.
First of all, welcome to the site. I also reside in Portland. I would like to see this event (I don't have access to a telescope (or the necessary attachments to take photos through a telescope.) If anyone else has a telescope-- and is willing to meet, You may send me a private message. Thanks Allen
I'll be outside for it.Capturing from just west of the"Bomber".Cheers.

More precise location? I live in Stumptown....
I'm planning on heading out and trying to stay warm :-D
We should have clear skies here, temps in the mid 20's.
If anybody local wants to get together and make an eclipse party :D out of it, let me know, I'm game.

I took the eclipse on February 28, 2008--yes it was cold in Seattle. I took shots of the various fazes so was outside in the backyard for quite awhile. All I had at that time for a lens was a 70-300 so used it consequently the pictures are small and not as good detail as would be provided with a telescope.
Composite Picture
Thanks for the info concerning the moon. Since I live in the American Southwest I will brave the elements and try to photograph this event be it total or partial.
