Many of us don't read the manual and if we do we can't understand it.
Yep - I'm of this group - BUT - I do take it one project at a time ( a portion like bracketing for instance) and learn to use it, then move on to another. Seldom do I post a question on my camera as I am able to work my way through my problem by doing it over and over till I have it conquered.
Oh - by the way I am also of the belief that there is no stupid questions - just some that seem stupid to those who have had the answer for years.

Harvey, I have to agree with you. Although I do read the manual and I do understand what I read, I first like to play around with the camera to get use to it and discover on my own the workings of the camera. Anything I don't understand about the camera I'll go to the manual. I am like that with most any man toys I happen to buy. Also, like you, I'll take one feature at a time and learn that, like my cameras bracketing feature which is most handy with my digital camera. My digital camera has features that my older 35mm film camera never had like in-camera black & white with filters, different focal points etc. There is a lot to learn about digital camera to get the full use out of one. Even some point and shoots are complex in features alone. Luckily, we also have forums like UHH to go to. I might add that even with all those extra features on a digital camera, they are not needed to take decent pictures. All cameras work the same with the basics.

GinaP asked for advice on improving her photo and plenty of good advice was being offered. Then "cthahn" chipped in with a supercilious and nasty message to her. I replied to him/her pretty bluntly because I tripped over him yesterday and consequently read his history - one question and sixteen pages of his replies of a like nature, no contributions (not that that matters) and no helpful advice. So I sent the following Personal Message:

cthahn - if you offend me one more time by venting your customary vitriol on anyone where I happen to read it I will be asking others to support me in having you banned from The Ugly Hedgehog.
Mike Gallagher.

He replied by PM, displaying his usual attitude to all those the Ugly Hedgehog exists for:

If it is too hot in the kitchen, get out. I tell the way it is.
I have never read so many stupid titles, questions expecting to get answers when they do not read their manuals, and do not know anything about the basics of photography. All everyone worries about now are super zooms, more pixels, and full frame. Buy an expensive camera and now you are a photographer. Buy photoshop and never learn how to use. Elements is for dummies. I use a D200, D70IR, no zoom lenses, all raw, exposure meter, and elements. I have doing photography for 60 years, and learned a few things, not everything, by taking many classes and have a good understanding of the basics which not many do not know..
If you do not like what I write to others, that really is not your business.

(End of message)
Why, considering his disdain for novices, and lack of pleasure in what he sees here (his 16 pages of replies makes that plain) does he bother prowling our pages?
Mike.

IMHO it is best simply to ignore folks such as this fool.
He has no skills with humans. He probably sits around his computer in a beer stained undershirt and boxers, smoking cheap cigars, moving from one forum to another.

Clearly he has a distain for anyone he considers under "his level of proficiency".

These sad individuals are simply left alone in their misery.
It will get bored and move on. Or perhaps alphabetize his used light seal collection

Mike, I heard a rumor that cthahn is JR1's father. That would explain it all. Oh, I'm watching Inspector Morse as I type. Great show. Love it. Thanks for the tip!

I know you weren't saying that to me but the thought had crossed my mind too. A conversation between them would be interesting!

I visit a computer forum where they say 'There's no such thing as a stupid question. But it is easy to answer!'

Mike.

"A miserable old bastard is just that. Nothing more nothing less."

Yeah, that's what I should have said in the first place. Note to self: do NOT post to UHH after a bad day at work!!!

I don't claim to know how you think, hence my use of terms such as "I suspect," "do you think," "I think," "maybe," etc...
Jeez.

Hey, some of us Old Farts are not defensive. I love learning new things, and helping others of older, and younger generations learn also.

Thank goodness one of the good ones spoke up! One should never stop learning and helping... that was my initial intention to get across. We have so much to learn from each other if we can just be patient with each other.

Hell, I'm a white man and I've never been in charge of anything.
