Back in the 70's and 80's I was the guy who carried his Minolta 35mm about everywhere I went. I was one of them people that took thousands of pictures documenting life and history. In my travel's with the Army over the years I filled album after album of pictures from all over the World. Over the last 20 some years I've pretty much limited my photography to family events and milestones.

My old Minolta 35mm has become outdated and I have retired it and started investing in my new DSLR. Im a nature lover, landscape and animals is some of my favorite things to shoot. Im still pretty new to this digital thing and I'm hoping to learn a thing or two from everybody here!

Im not a professional and I don't do this for anybody but me so I didn't spend the money for a high end camera, just couldn't afford to get the best. I went with a new Cannon T3i 18mp, I know the Nikon people will be vocal about that one! Im currently in search of a new good quality telephoto lens so I can get and get the nature photos I want to take. The money I saved buying this camera left me with about a thousand dollars in my budget for a good lens and filters, heading to the camera shop this weekend to spend my money, I hope I can find a good quality lens in my price range! Any suggestions on lenses in my price range would be appreciated!

I would go with a walkabout zoom in the focal range of 24-105 mm. I use mine almost all the time

Welcome...as an old Nikon guy I do recognize that the Canons are super cameras. It's like Ford v Chevy...I prefer Ford but currently drive a Chevy...go figure. ;-)

Thanks for the welcome. For years I developed my own film and pictures. With the digital I realize I'm going to need a good computer program for editing. I have an excellent computer with tons of memory and storage, my first computer was back in the 80's, a IBM PC Jr.! Even though my photography had stayed old school over the years I have always been a big computer geek. Seems most of the people I have talked to either use Photo Shop or Light Room, are these good enough or should I invest in something else? I have Photo Shop Elements, Ive played around with it some and learned the basics in it, should I upgrade to something like CS5 or go to an entirely different program?

Welcome to the forum!!! Check out the Canon 400mm /5.6L, they are about $1200 new, so you can probably get a good used one for way less than half that price. They 're a tad slow, but have very good image quality, fast AF and are very light and hand-holdable!

Hi, I hope you enjoy the learning and fun on the site. One question though, why did you not purchase a Sony camera given that you used a Minolta camera because their lenses fit Sony's Alpha range.

Welcome aboard. Check out the new Tamron 18-270. I find it a good walkaround lens.

Or the Sigma 18-250 which I got yesterday. I am going to retire at least 3 of my older lenses and use the Sig as a walk around lens. So far, it is great and for $399 it is a real deal. Put the balance of the money in your pocket for a nice trip like I am going to do in February.
