I'm just getting into photography at the age of 54. I've looked at the possibility in the past with interest but it just never seemed to take hold. Now I just got an early Christmas present, a Canon T3i so I've been reading the beginner material to get a grasp of what is taking place inside the camera. What I want to read now is all about filters. What are they used for and when. It seems that some people use them as a lens protector alone from what i can find, but unless the filter is clear you are going to get some effect on your picture. But of course the predominant reason is to filter light I'm sure, in different ways for different reasons. Could someone direct me to an in depth article on filters? Thanks, Azycray
Well right after I posted this I found a link for a filter ad which gave me an introduction to filters
http://www.singh-ray.com/SinghRayBrochure-Mar11.pdfBut I would still appreciate more info on the topic if someone could point me in the right direction.
OMG- those prices are BIG enought to choke an elephant...

Elsewhere in this forum members have pointed out several links to good filter information; however, stay away from books and pamphlets entitled "All about..." There isn't such a thing.

Those are about the most expensive filters I've run across !!
Choke !!! Agree with donrent. Those prices HURT.
Great article JimH. My favorite filter, even over my polarizers.
Most digital cameras come with the ability to control color through the white balance functions. My most important filter is a circular polorizer which controls reflection off surfaces. Others would be nd filters. I would start with those.

Funny you should ask that. I, too have some filter questions and have been researching fog filters for a couple of days. I will post a question in a new thread after this comment.
One of the popular manufacturers is Tiffen (
www.tiffen.com), also Hoya, et al. Anyhow, I just looked at Tiffen's website and they have an INTERACTIVE filter chart.
http://www.tiffen.com/filters_virtual_reality.htmlYou click on a filter, it takes you to a page with a virtual filter, and you can move the filter around the picture to see the effects on different parts of the photo. However, it doesn't do my fog filter question any good.

when I first started, I went filter crazy. I bought all kinds of filters. Now that I've settled down I don't take many filters with me. In my opinion a circular polarizer the most important filter to have. You can also use it as a lens protector. If you don't want to use the circular polarizer as a lens protector, use a UV filter. I think ND filter and a graduated ND filter are good to have around. In my opinion Tiffen makes good filters and I almost always buy on line at B&H Photo. If you live near NYC stop in at their store. Don't do what I did and buy buy anything that sounded like it might be good to have.
That's the one I bought from Amazon !! Worth every penny !
