Hey guys I am 86. I have a Nikon d300 but am lusting for a d800e. I have a pretty grotty left knee, wonky heart though it seems to be keeping good shape under the 8 pills I take. If I kick the bucket soon all that cash in the sink. Any thoughts on what I should do ?

Soli, if you kick the bucket what will you do with the cash?? Get the camera. :) TNmike
GO FOR IT.
You've worked all your life why not have the toys. The money is not going to do you any good when you're 6 feet under.

Take a picture of the bucket and the sink with the cash in it as memories. That what photos are! LOL
I retired from a great job after 40 years as a scientist professor. I bought the best Nikon equipment and am enjoying my new life as an artist. I buy whatever I want and travel to the best places to shoot images and create art that gives me pleasure while I can.

Well, I'd say unless you are going to give the money to relatives after your life saving it, you should enjoy it while you can. If you are at least partially mobile and able to go through a day without heart pain, GO FOR IT.
My Uncle just celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday and he's worth over $800,000.00 with just me and my brother in his will that I am executor of. He sits in his recliner reading books and watching TV all day with two short walks during the day. I tell him to use his money for maybe a cruise or whatever and he refuses. I'm 71 and my brother is 67. I take care of Uncle Ted with him having the Master Bedroom in my house, take him to the library, feed him what ever he wants etc etc etc. He won't give up a penny of his savings for anything and won't gift it to my brother or I. Guess he just wants to die with lots of money. Sad, because he's mobile enough to enjoy it. He's a depression child though and understand his hesitation to spend money.

There is no point in having the money just sitting the the bank. You can't take it with you when you go.
Enjoy life and have fun.

Keep doing what your are doing. I always believed that when you stop doing, you die! Hey you can't take it with you and who knows, maybe one of your heirs will want the camera gear more than the money. :-0

You can't take it with you, enjoy what you have now.

Well, it seems like grumpy old sarge69 has quite a big heart! Stop hiding it.
I say life is short so live it and as was said earlier you can't take it with you so enjoy it. Nothing beats a new camera to learn and keep your mind in the game. I believe photography is a lifetime journey, there is always something new to learn. Have fun. ;)

Hi Soli, it sounds to me that you know exactly what you want and you should not waste any more time thinking about it. I totally agree with what everyone else has said so just go for it.

Not sure how serious you are but...
Create a bucket list, if you have not done so already and go for it if you can afford it.
What else is there to say?
As to the the question... I switched from a D300 to a D800e and never looked back other than to wonder why I waited so long.
Please take note that that whatever lens you have for the D300 will automatically adapt to the D800 full format but that the result will be cropped to a DX format. To get the full impact of the FX format you must have lenses made for that. If you have 'old' lenses from the pre-digital era they will work but mostly on manual mode so some saving there AND a good case can be made for the scales that exists on their barrels.
