Instead of carrying one or two camera bags, what are your thoughts about using a photographer's vest and if so, what brand/size would you recommend? Thanks, Ol' Don

I have thought about it as I'm planning a plane trip and all my camera junk is pushing the limits for "carry on". I'm afraid to check anything because of the way they treat your luggage and pilfer through it. So..I thought about one to carry some extra stuff in while on the plane (to keep it out of my carry on bag)
Domke makes one that I think would be a good one. Some have zippered sleeves which may come in handy.

Tilley Endurables here in Canada make a "Vest of Many Pockets" that makes an excellent photographers vest.

They aren't cheap but Tilley products are made to the highest production standards.

You can check out the "VOMP" here:

Good luck with your decision.

I got one of these before it went on sale. No complaints.

I also got one of these - more stylish.

I use my vest when shooting sports. It is way more convenient than a bag. I have an inexpensive bag that carries two smaller lens, spare battery, extra cards and any miscellaneous items I need. Why more people don't use them is a mystery to me. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike

I use a fisherman's tackle jacket. Dozens of pockets and plenty of room.

Wow. "They aren't cheap..." is spot on. Looks good, but .....

I use a Domke vest. It's very good, but it's black and hot in the sun. Next time I'll get tan. I'm 6'2" and weigh about 250#; I wear a 2X and it fits me very well.

5 photographers will answer with 5 different answers. Go to a camera store and find what you like.

I have a Domke, It is nice because I can carry a lot of things in the pockets. I live in south Florida so I got the model with the mesh body instead of solid cloth, breathes easier and is cooler(?) in the heat and humidity. For travelling, it is like the Scotts Travel Vests, just take it off and lay it on the xray conveyor belt and viola! Does not count as a carry on either since you are wearing it you can still take two carry on bags with you. I have the tan one instead of the black version to be a little cooler, I have a large size but you need to base size on your body not what the majority of users say. Chinese knock-offs aremade for chinese people, americans need to order MUCH larger sizes, I bought one once and ended up with a 5X just to fit.

Go to vestedinterest.com. They make incredible vests for photographers, not cheap, but customized for your type of photographic interests. Workmanship and materials are a-one.

That's some selection of vests! When I get a high-paying job as a pro for a TV station, I'll get one. I see they have a vest with a rear pocket for a VHS tape. :D
