Shot with Nikon D600, 70-300 kit zoom, tripod. I shot 3 exposures 1 EV apart.

The scene was gorgeous with pinks/magentas in the sky and on Mount Hood. Here are the three exposures right out of the camera-

Anyone have suggestions as to why this image did not capture as I saw it?

Please feel free to download and blend so I can see what others have in mind.

#1 looks like the only one close to proper exposure and even that seems like it could be darker in order to saturate the colors better (on my monitor). Here's something from playing in Picasa and Photo Gallery (Windows 8 ver.). I have close to zero pp skill :)

Using image #1, made adjustments to shadows, color, exposure and very slight HDR-ish

Here's what I got using Photomatix Pro. I did have an error on the last photo you posted, EV was +1 where the First was EV -2. On second download it seem to go though fine.
Note I made not adjustment, this is as it was processed.

I really appreciate the help, everyone. The images you guys posted look like what I came up with.

It just doesn't do it justice. There was a lot of haze in the air, so maybe the image is what I get, and I don't throw a fit.

Thanks again for helping.

I have found that on not such choice days, that HDR just doesn't have the effect on desires. But If you take just the one photo and run it though the process of tone mapping I can get the results I wanted. I took the liberty to do that with your photo.

  I have frequently found that my desire for a particular image has very little effect on the lighting. Some days one just can't do a thing with it. :XD: :XD:

Here are two versions I tried. Both have contrast, sharpening, structure, and clarity increases. I messed with the color a bit on the second. You are right about the haze though. I think I was able to cut through most of it. 8-)

The last image is your original for comparison.

Forgot to mention I did change the white balance a bit toward the warm side.

I never fail to be astonished by our dependence on "Darkroom" effects to create the image we want; rather, it seems to me that we would be better served by obtaining the VERY best image possible in camera first.

It is also curious that so far no one has mentioned the benefits of correct white balance, exposure settings and the potential use of haze reduction, polarizing, or even color filters. Instead we all have assumed that we can simply jump in to our virtual darkrooms to correct what has proven to be a disappointing capture.

It seems that we stand a much better chance of creating the memorable images we all seek were we to once again focus on the mastery of PHTOTOGRAPHY first, and the pursuit of computer generated special effects second.

I wish you well with your efforts to preserve this phenomenal mountain in photo imagery -- I love being in that part of Oregon and near the mountain myself. In fact, I think I have some shots taken from the exact same spot you used when you framed this one.
