"Is there nothing Velcro can't do?"

Ralloh asked, in another topical thread, "Is there nothing Velcro can't do?"

I've long thought that four people deserving of the Nobel Prize who never were nominated are: (1.) the inventor of the Aqua Lung, (2.) the inventor of WD-40, (3.) the inventor of duct tape, and (4.) the inventor of VELCRO !
Don't know what I'd do without it the stuff! Yes, I've long been a fan of Velcro; Someone stuck a label to my on my office door ( with Velcro) stating "The Velcro Palace -if wearing wool enter at your own risk" and at my retirement Party I was given a coupon for enrolment in a 12-step program for those suffering Velcro withdrawl. I have, as yet, not felt he need to use it.

....But first, a caveat: use only " Industrial strength Velcro" , not the effete, namby-pamby, wimpy hook-and-loop strips and "dots" sold to fasten pocket flaps and lapels on clothing. The industrial strength stuff is plenty strong as needed to hold outdoor tools to the garage wall: shovel, hoe, rake, hedge clipper, ...and perhaps even a small lawn tractor....Naaaaaah! Note that for holding such relatively heavy items the supporting hooked Velcro strip needs to be nailed or screwed or pop-riveted, using washers, to the garage or workshop wall or other supporting structure. The glue may otherwise loosen and give way in time.

USES DIRECTLY or INDIRECTLY APPLICABLE TO PHOTOGRAPHY:
(isn't everything?)
- Keeping track of the errant lens cap - already discussed in previous mesages)
-Secure smartphone camera to handholding/tripod attachment device

CAR OR TRUCK
a strip of hook Velcro as a "dock" across the flat, horizontal surface of the dash ( don't attach to vertical surfaces...likely to loosen in the heat of a closed
vehicle) for:
cell/smart phone, GPS device, toll "Zip-pass card, tire pressure gauge, pens/ pencils, mobile tablet, light meter, map envelope, solar battery charger, Kodak Pocket Photoguide (or just its exposure "slide-rule") , travel diary, case for sun glasses, shallow tray to keep small items from sliding off the dash at every turn, dry-erase note board (scrap of melamine 5"x7" or there-abouts) and dry-erase pen...incredibly useful!...no need for eraser--use your sleeve, shirt tail, or trousers.

At or near COMPUTER (home +/or office+/or laboratory)
-docks for: dry-erase board, dry-erase pen, mouse, slide-rule, stylus/pen for Wacom tablet, pen/pencil, acetate over-lays of composition schemes,
Post-it-note pad
-keep laptop from sliding on lap-desk
-keep small portable hard disk handy on lid of laptop
- attachment site for soft handle (made entirely of soft, loop Velcro (folded stick-to-sticky ) on back of tablet
- dock smartphone or tablet (with file of Photoshop actions/ techniques
. ..from Kelby and other sources)
KITCHEN:
secure tablet ( with recipes) to cabinet door
Velcro doesn't take kindly to repeated washing, so its use on most kitchen utensils is a bit of a lost cause...

WORKSHOP
WORKBENCH - if you use horizontal flourescent "Shop Lights" over the workbench:
stick a strip of the hook Velcro across the top of the ShopLight reflector
to secure: pencil/ pens/scriber/ marker, ruler, measuring tape, shop knife/box cutter, Post-it-Note pad....(four feet of Shoplight can hold a buncha stuff!)

LAY-OUT TABLE:
secure drafting instruments, markers, rulers, sliderule, triangle, compass, protractor, proportional divider, (these may be able to use hook Velcro on the light over the table or on the front edge of a shelf beside or over the table.

LABORATORY
at/on/near MICROSCOPE:
pencil/pen, filter container (polarizing filter and analyser, ND filters, color balance filters for film microphotography), dry erase board and pen, slide rule/calculator, iPod Touch (sync with smartphone and iPad).

...and these suggestions may just be cratching the surface of possibilities!

( ...and no, I have no financial interest in the Velcro brand in particular nor more generally in the generic hook-and-loop fastener industry...just a fanboy whose qualty and style of life would be diminished, in barely discernible quantitatively decreasing order, by the absence of single malt scotch, cameras, and Velcro!)

Please... other uses of Velcro you can suggest?

How about the inventor of the Thermos Bottle? After all, it keeps hot things hot and cold things cold .... but did you ever wonder how it knows which to do??
 :D :D :D

yeah...welll ....I gotta admit it's a close contender...maybe right up there with the rest! so, I mughta been a bit hasty!
And I love that line! Was that from the "hippy Dippy Weatherman" George Carlin? I can almost hear him saying . "...how does it know" with his patented expression of bewilderment.!

Just proves that anytime you try to make something "idiot-proof", a better idiot will come along. :D

Just a caution here; anything that obstructs a driver's vision may be subject to a ticket. I write as a former safety committee member in a Teamsters local in Ct. but I would think that applies in many/all states.
That said, thanks for the tips on the under appreciated item. We have a small box full of these little strips we got with various appliances and such. Time to put them to use.

Thanks, Bartulius,
Being a big, tall guy who doesn't encounter that problem of obstructed view, it didn't occur to me that nomal sized people could possibly be at risk of impaired view caused by stuff stuck to the dash!
So your caution is very much appreciated and well taken!

I apologize for not having thought of that myself!

Many thanks,

Dave in SD

Any loose items on the dash such as loose papers, food wrappers and such will get you a ticket. Reason stated is these items could fly up and block your vision.

Dave, I read where Jay Leno used Velcro to hold his custom made wheel covers to one of his Buicks.
I used it on my 57 to help hold the wheel covers on it and keep them from turning on the wheel and bending the valve stems. It works.
