In a small town nearby, there is a sign saying: No texting or phoning or you will be fined." This is near a fire house and police station. Are they afraid that a cell phone is going to interfere with their communication?

Since the sign is by the police and fire depts, who's going to complain. Suppose someone is injured nearby. I guess it would be illegal to dial 911. :D

Towns do what they want until someone brings a lawsuit.

Why do I think pulling out a camera would be at least as dangerous as texting or phoning? Sounds awfully illegal to me. OK, Jerry, go for it! Let us know how it turns out.

Do you mean while driving pass in your car or on foot walking? Of course texting or phoning while driving is illegal in most states.

Does this restriction refer to drivers of automobiles? If so, its for a larger area than just in front of the police or fire stations. And, such a law makes good sense to me...

Legal or not, I believe it's a great idea.
Cell phones are the worst invention ever, they have made people very very rude. Ernie

Maybe if you stopped and asked what the sign meant you get an answer . How would anyone on this website know, especially if you do not mention the name of the town, or did you just write this just to say something stupid.

I don't understand this "texting" restriction.
All the people I've seen texting don't hold the phone against their ear. Most of them text around lap height.
So, unless you're on a bridge above a texter in an automobile, how would you know whether they're texting or not?
And how are you going to prove they were texting? This seems to be an inert law designed to make someone happy.
I'm no cell phone lover even though I own one, a Tracphone. I carry it for emergencies because I'm an old man and pay phones are all but obsolete.
Cell phones are more important than people anymore, and so are recorded messages with menus.

It would apply to anyone. The signs are away from the curb and at a lower height. I'll have to get over there and take a picture - with my cell phone. :D

I don't understand this "texting" restri... (show quote)

I'm old, too... However, I also have an iPhone and can advise that texting takes focus and concentration. If you are driving while trying to it, you are distracted from the task of driving. Not good... And, if you have fat fingers, like me, then texting is even more of a challenge. LOL!

It is illegal in some areas to text and drive. Some areas even ban cell phone use completely.

And, if you are texting while driving, be assured that the accident investigator will be looking at your phone to see if it was being used at the time of the accident.

I was reading an article a couple of weeks ago about a new Radio Telescope, somewhere in the US, where it is now illegal to use electronic devises for a radius of tens ? of miles around the town due to interference concerns.

Yes, there is a town that is home to a giant radio telescope. They have "radio silence" for quite a radius around the site so as to preserve the quality of the signals they are "listening" to. True...
