Its not nearly as good as the Nikon 55-200mm, and they are quite inexpensive. Both are entry level lenses from their respective manufacturers, I cannot recommend it and I am a big fan of many of Sigmas lenses, just not that one.

By the time I get beyond about 85mm, I think VR is essential and worth the extra dollars. (Amortize the price difference over the life of the lens.)

These Nikor zoom lenses with VR are hard to beat for the money. The Sigma is a decent lens but I will take the Nikor unless there is a significant difference in price.

I have listed my Nikkor 55-200mm lens on the Buy/Sell/Trade. It was only on my camera for a few weeks until I received my 18-200mm lens. It's in mint condition if you decide to go that route. I needed the wide as well as long range for a travel walk-around lens.

I have the Tamron 18-270 on my 5100. It's a reasonable price and smaller than the Nikkor equivalent. Size and weight are always an issue for me. You might want to take a look at it. It's gotten good reviews for a walk-around lens when you don't want to carry a lot of glass.

You can pick up the Nikon 55-200 VR very inexpensively. I have an extra I'd be happy to sell you but the shipping wouldn't make sense.

However the reason I have it is that I gave my daughter-in-law my 55-300...because it is a far superior lens. One of these days I'm going to put the 55-200 on eBay for whatever someone will offer. It is OK but not near the 55-300 in image quality.

(This started with me buying a 28-300, which is better yet...read that as much more expensive.)
