America's Cup Race 8

Oracle beats Aotearoa by 52 seconds.
Score: New Zealand 6 - USA nil.
Still 3 to go.

Due to sustained wind strength of 30 knots Race 9, with NZ slightly ahead, was abandoned and postponed.

Oracle has made changes that appear to have equalled Aotearoa's speed and has now become a worthy contender for the trophy.

Bouquets for both crews:
as the boats came together NZ tacked to port to lead USA but the boat tipped to within 2 degrees of the capsize point, couldn't complete the manoeuvre and began to turn into Oracle's path, slowing as she did so. During this heart-stopping event the grinders, who are pumping oil for the hydraulic operating systems, and were now high in the air, never stopped pumping and the capsize was averted and the boat was righted.

As Aotearoa's starboard hull came down Oracle was probably close enough to have the hull land on her port side but had turned away and escaped by the time Aotearoa's hull hit the water. Aotearoa virtually stopped dead before racing on.

Each crew demonstrated the qualities of superb dedication and seamanship that the America's Cup has come to stand for.

The picture, from the under side, of the near capsize ,will probably become an icon of this competition.

Roll on.

Mike

I watched one of those races yesterday. Didn't seem anything like what I remember as the Americas Cup. Looked like a high t ech game of chicken, or demolition derby.

Almost heartstopping for me, and I'm sure so many others here. High hopes for a better day on Monday, and then just Wednesday to go. ( we hope!!!) Great skippers on both sides, to be able to carry on. Cheers, Nancy J

After having been a coach for the America's Cup in '95, I confess that I'm naturally biased in favor of our American Team.

I will also tell ANY body who will listen that you Kiwis can sure sail! I find myself thinking that I would give just about anything to be a member of either crew.

Ok, I'll bite. Educate me, how does this qualify as a stupid story?

As a follow up to my previous question, how does this qualify me to be a stupid person that knows other stupid people? Explain yourself please.

Ohh, I noticed the quote, which is why I've asked you directly to explain yourself. His response seemed aimed at me. Since you and I have had no conversation, I was wondering why you are in agreement with him. Naturally, I've given you an opportunity to explain in the unlikely event that I had misinterpreted your comments.

Based on the apparent sarcasm of your response I can only conclude that you think my commentary was stupid. If that is how you feel, your comments are rude, unwelcome, unnecessary, and an interruption to this thread. If, however, I have made a mistake and your comments were not intended to be caustic, then I suggest you pay greater attention to how you communicate. Certainly, you don't want everyone to see you as a jerk, do you?

dude I was responding to the response by cthahn, seems pretty clear to me I'm on your side, if you want to make this about you I'm not interested. I'm not a jerk, but it's a free country if you want to think so you have my blessings, I'm moving on
