to get the kind of shots I was looking for. About 3,000 shots and came up with this. D600, Sigma 150-500, Benro tripod, manual and tested light conditions. This bird was 110 yards out (Nikon range finder). Early morning looking for breakfast. It always seems to be about the available light. CC always welcome.
It was worth it, nice capture.
Aren't you glad it wasn't film? Imagine the cost!
for sure. I do remember those days of sending 35mm film to Rochester for processing. Kodak always had the best processing. Digital sure beats the 3 day wait to see results.

I just got my sigma 150-500 in August, I love it.
Make sure your using Auto Focus Continuous Mode on the Nikon. The focus is soft and not sure if due to the focusing Mode or the Sigma lens.
Well just checked the meta data and it says your using a nikon 70-300mm with the D600 F/11 ISO400
With this lens I would try to work an area where the birds are a little closer.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm so it is. I must have picked the wrong shot out of the library. It says Aug 4. Now don't I feel like a jerk. Sorry all, I will try to find the correct shot.
Regardless of the lens use Auto Focus Continuous Mode/ Single Center Focus Point and get closer to the subject. I notice this was a little over 2 mega pixel crop from a 24 mega pixel camera which means this bird was to far away. All camera and lens combos have Limits. To get Great photos you have to find subjects closer or ways to approach them.

That was as close as I could get without a boat. I always use AFC with Focus priority for shutter release. It was also spot focus vs matrix.
This is a Sig 150-500 shot. Unfortunatley the weed was in the way and the bird flew off before I could get another shot.
Exposure looks good, but I noticed you were at 380mm and not zoomed in all the way. The file size also was very small meaning a large crop. It really comes down to getting closer to the subject. I here MT mention that sigma will also fine tune the lens and camera combo for free if you send it to them. I would suggest this as an option to insure your getting the sharpest photo possible. Join a local birding club also as they will help you learn the techniques for getting closer to your subjects.
