What kind of reputation does Sigma have when it comes to the brand in general?

I don't think I have heard anything negative about Sigma. The big camera stores carry them.
I bought one, once and it worked fine. It turned in a different direction to zoom in as compared to the Canon lens that I have. I was annoyed by that.
It's not in the camera bag anymore.
Just a personal preference for me.

I own both Sigma 10-20mm lens and Ring Flash and very happy with them. I also had return the Ring Flash for repair and it was handled with minimum amount of hassle. I have photographer friends who owns Sigma lenses and they are very happy with them. Arnold

Each of the off-brand lens makers has one or two really high end lenses that are VERY good, but a lot of their everyday lenses are not up to the quality of the camera makers lenses. The glass may not be as good and build quality will not be as good.
You may luck out and get a good example, see if you can get a trial period where you can return it if it doesn't work out. I have also heard horror stories of trying to get a off brand lens repaired. A lot depends on what kind of pictures you will be taking and what kind of conditions you will subjecting the lens too.
Check something like eBay or Craigslist and you may be able to get a OM lens for the same or better price as a off brand lens.

I have two Sigma lenses and like them a lot. I am considering a third Sigma lens. Their quality is good.

I had a Sigma 28mm-80mm zoom back in the 70's that now resides at the bottom of Yellowstone lake after filling with moisture on a foggy morning. Poor sealing has been a problem with them for many years, but their higher end lenses are quite good. I also have a Sigma 400mm APO F4 that I have carried for over 20 years and it is an EXCELLENT long lense for wildlife work, and is well sealed against moisture from my experience. I also have a couple Tokinas, buy their "Gold" trimmed lenses, not the cheaper "Red" trimmed ones and you will do good with them too. I have no Tamrom experience but have seen good as well as poor quality from them in the lenses used by others around me. Even the lenses from Nikon and Canon came in varying degrees of quality.
An old adage: "Your don't need to buy the best there is, but buy the best you can afford." Follow this simple rule and you will have a great time with your photography as well.

Glass has come a long way since the 70's, in the 70 most of the third party glass never gave you a sharp image. Most of the glass from third party is pretty good. If you can afford nikon or camera glass it is better (sealed and sharper) but pricer

I have the 150-500mm and absolutely love it...sharp,clean images. I am a Nikon user and it works beautifully with the D300.

I have owned the Sigma 18/125, 180 macro, 150 macro, 50 macro and 10/20. I have also owned the Canon 100 macro and still own the Canon 60 macro. Optically those lenses are excellent. The macro lenses are as good as any other macro and are better than most. The 180 and 150 macros are outstanding lenses and I would put them up there with the best made.

Day Lily Sigma 150 macro

I have had a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 macro zoom for about a year. I love it! Sharp albeit a bit heavy (but I need the exercise). I dropped it on the way to the Bahamas this summer and the repair was excellent. Auto focus is rated as a bit noisy but, except for wildlife, who's listening?

I have a 18/125 Sigma wich I love. Sharper than my Tamaron. Good warranty which I used after a year or so when I kept getting a "lost contact with lens error". Zoom rotation is opposite of most other lens which is annoying.

I would buy another
