Yes. Absolutely. Working on a Smart Preview is the same as working on the RAW image you've loaded in to your library. As stated before, as soon as you plug your external drive in again, LR5 will apply the changes you've made to the RAW files in your catalog and then you can throw away the Smart Preview to regain the space they've occupied.
